This title was first published in 2000. Encouraging, even requiring, higher density urban development is a major policy in the European Community and of Agenda 21, and a central principle of growth management programmes used by cities around the world. This work takes a critical look at a number of claims made by proponents of this initiative, seeking to answer whether indeed this strategy controls the spread of urban suburbs into open lands, is acceptable to residents, reduces trip lengths and encourages use of public transit, improves efficiency in providing urban infrastructure and services, and results in environmental improvements supporting higher quality of life in cities.

Studies of compact cities have evolved along with the rising awareness of climate change and sustainable development. Relevant debates, however, reveal that the prevailing definitions and practices of compact cities are tied primarily to traditional Western urban forms. This book reinterprets "compact city", and develops a ground-breaking discourse of "Vertical Urbanism", a concept that has never been critically articulated. It emphasizes "Vertical Urbanism" as a dynamic design strategy instead of a static form, distinguishing it from the stereotyped concept of "vertical city" or "towers in the park" dominant in China and elsewhere, and suggests its adaptability to different geographic and cultural contexts. Using Chinese cities as laboratories of investigation, this book explores the design, ecological, and sociocultural dimensions of building compact cities, and addresses important global urban issues through localized design solutions, such as the relationship between density and vitality, the integration of horizontal and vertical dimensions of design, and the ecological and social adaptability of combinatory mega-forms. In addition, through discussions with scholars from the United States, China, and Japan, this book provides an insight into the theoretical debates surrounding "compact city" and "Vertical Urbanism" in the global context. Scholars and students in architecture and urban planning will be attracted by this book. Also, it will appeal to readers with an interest in urban development and Asian studies.

This book offers a complex and problem-based analysis of the past, present, and future of smart cities in Japan’s energy transition. With 92% of Japanese living in urban areas and a goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Japan’s energy future will depend largely on how its cities can become smarter, greener, and more resilient. To reach these ambitions, a collective effort is required, with actions coming from Tokyo to Kumamoto, from Yokohama to Sapporo, and throughout dozens of smaller and bigger Japanese urban structures. This book addresses the key issues that have emerged or may emerge in various Japanese cities that are pursuing smart energy initiatives. The authors examine several issues, including international cooperation, heating decarbonisation, foreign direct investments, city planning, housing policies, and technology-related risks in the context of Japan’s energy transition. Drawing on case studies from different regions of Japan and sectors of Japanese economy significant for reaching carbon neutrality, this book will be a valuable resource for all interested in energy transition, climate action, and smart cities, where Japan and Japanese smart cities serve as excellent benchmarks.

""Compact Cities"" addresses the pressing issue of urban sprawl by advocating for high-density, sustainable urban environments. It challenges the assumption that sprawling suburbs are the ideal living environment, presenting compact urban design as a pathway to resource optimization and reduced ecological footprint. The book explores how well-planned compact cities can minimize environmental damage and foster vibrant, livable communities. Intriguing facts include how urban sprawl contributes to climate change and the social isolation experienced by car-dependent populations. The book examines the evolution of urban planning, highlighting the environmental and social consequences of low-density development. It emphasizes the need for integrated approaches to urban planning and offers case studies of successful compact cities worldwide. These examples showcase the integration of green spaces, efficient public transportation, and mixed-use developments that promote walkability and social interaction. The book progresses from fundamental concepts to detailed analyses, culminating in a framework for implementing compact urban development in diverse contexts.

Cities are hubs of economic, innovative, and cultural activity and drivers of global progress, but their rapid expansion presents formidable challenges to the environment, infrastructure, and the well-being of their inhabitants. Consequently, the study of urban ecosystems has emerged as a crucial field that necessitates transcending disciplinary boundaries to address the relationships between natural and built environments that profoundly shape the lives of billions. Geospatial science, encompassing technologies such as GIS, remote sensing, satellite imagery, and GPS, offers indispensable tools for comprehending, managing, and thriving within urban environments. This book examines the pivotal role of geospatial science in monitoring urban landscapes and managing city-specific challenges. Rich with illustrations of fundamental concepts and case studies of urban ecosystems, with a notable emphasis on India, contributions highlight practical applications of geospatial tools in urban planning and climate change mitigation. As a collaborative, interdisciplinary endeavor from diverse contributors, this book serves as a repository of wide-ranging perspectives, theories, and methodologies, inspiring critical inquiry and innovative problem-solving.
