Community Schools in Action: Lessons from a Decade of Practice presents the Children's Aid Society's (CAS) approach to creating community schools for the 21st century. CAS began this work in New York City more than a decade ago and today operates thirteen such schools in the low-income neighborhoods of Washington Heights, East Harlem, and the Bronx. Through a technical assistance center operated by CAS, hundreds of other schools across the country and the world are adapting this model. The contributors to the volume supply invaluable information about the selected program components based on their own experiences working with community schools. They describe how and why CAS started its community school initiative and explain how CAS community schools are organized, integrated with the school system, sustained, and evaluated.

Ferrara and Jacobson go inside community schools across the country to explore the different roles that make this collaborative education reform work. This book provides practitioners, policymakers, family members, youth, and local leaders a greater understanding of the different roles that make up a community school and tools for action. Built on years of practice, research, and continuous improvement, community schools are an innovative, effective, and grassroots strategy for bringing schools and communities together in order to improve outcomes for students, families, and communities. This education reform is growing as school site, local, and state leaders seek collaborative solutions to our schools’ most persistent challenges. The contributors, experts in the field, represent a diverse group of people with longstanding commitments to the community school strategy. From principals to family members, from community partners to teachers, this book illustrates how together, we all have a part to play in the development of successful community schools.

Community schools have always rooted their work in a solid body of research about what it takes to promote student success, including parental involvement in children's education, rich and engaging out-of-school experiences, student wellness and family stability. Because the community schools strategy, on its face, makes sense--and because the evidence shows that it works--an increasing number of schools in the United States and abroad have adopted this strategy. According to the Coalition for Community Schools, a national alliance of more than 170 organizations, at least 5,000 U.S. schools have been transformed into community schools. And through the Children's Aid Society's (CAS's) national and international work at the National Center for Community Schools, there is now an estimate of at least 27,000 additional schools worldwide pursuing this approach. Global forces that are driving this change include new immigration patterns, income-based achievement gaps, post-conflict political changes and the push for democratization in post-Communist countries. These and other issues are explored in this guidebook. Appended are: (1) Role of a Lead Partner in a Community School; (2) Community School Coordinator Sample of Job Description; (3) Stages of Development of Community Schools; (4) Theory of Change Basics for Community Schools; and (5) The CAS Theory of Change. A list of resources is included.

This volume summarizes the community school experiences of the Children's Aid Society and Beacons in New York City and other places; university assisted models in Philadelphia; school system generated community schools in Chicago; communitywide councils in Evansville, Indiana, and Portland, Oregon; and Boston's Full-Service Schools Roundtable. The efforts of the Public Education Network to build public will for collaboration and California's statewide Healthy Start Initiaitve show how it is possible to expand the concepts over larger areas, and the Coalition for Community Schools provides the rationale for national community school legislation. This is the 107th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Youth Development. Click here to view the entire catalog of New Directions for Youth Development titles.
