Community-Based Collaborative Action Research: A Nursing Approach provides a clear framework for an action research process to improve health outcomes and enact needed systems improvement. The authors bring years of experience in community-based collaborative action research (CBCAR) to demonstrate how nursing and other health care practitioners, leaders, and scholars can transform communities by identifying and addressing systemic and structural barriers to health and well-being. These communities can range from neighborhoods, practice environments, and villages to boardrooms and organizations. Ideal for novice and experienced researchers, including graduate and doctoral students involved in research initiatives and capstone projects, this rigorous text is a non-prescriptive, step-by-step guide to enacting meaningful change that emerges primarily from within the community. Rooted in social justice and advocacy and driven by theory and evidence-based practice, Community-Based Collaborative Action Research: A Nursing Approach is a unique and innovative resource.

Improving health in populations in which health is poor is a complex process. This book argues that the traditional government approach of exhorting individuals to live healthier lifestyles is not enough - action to promote public health needs to take place not just through public agencies, but also by engaging community assets and resources in their broadest sense. The book reports lessons from the experience of planning, establishing and delivering such action by the five-year Sustainable Health Action Research Programme (SHARP) in Wales. It critically examines the experience of SHARP in relation to current literature on policy; community health and health inequalities; and action research. The authors make clear how this regional development has produced opportunities for developing general concepts and theory about community-based policy developments that are relevant across national boundaries and show that complex and sustained community action, and effective local partnership, are fundamental components of the mix of factors required to address health inequalities successfully. The book concludes by indicating the connections between SHARP and earlier traditions of community-based action, and by arguing that we need to be bolder in our approaches to community-based health improvement and more flexible in our understanding of the ways in which knowledge and inform developments in health policy. The book will be of interest to practitioners and activists working in community-based projects; students in community development, health studies and medical sociology; professionals working in health promotion, community nursing and allied areas; and policy makers working at local, regional and national levels.

Methods in Community-Based Participatory Research for Health Written by distinguished experts in the field, this book shows how researchers, practitioners, and community partners can work together to establish and maintain equitable partnerships using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach to increase knowledge and improve health and well-being of the communities involved. What distinguishes CBPR from other approaches to research is the active engagement of all partners in the process. This book provides a comprehensive and thorough presentation of CBPR study designs, specific data collection and analysis methods, and innovative partnership structures and process methods. This book informs students, practitioners, researchers, and community members about methods and applications needed to conduct CBPR in the widest range of research areas—including social determinants of health, health disparities, health promotion, community interventions, disease management, health services, and environmental health. "This book is a major contribution to the public health field. The editors are some of our most outstanding leaders in community-based participatory research." —From the Foreword by David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., interim president, Morehouse School of Medicine; 16th U.S. Surgeon General "Missing from the emerging field of university-community partnerships is a broad-based discussion of methods for partnership formation and sustainability. This must-have edited volume is an important contribution to building the field. Based on federally-funded collaborative research with multiple community stakeholders, it offers readers across disciplines and sectors a set of conceptual and practical tools and case materials for application and teaching." —Jean J. Schensul, Ph.D., senior scientist and founding director, Institute for Community Research
