Who does not learn well when given generous amounts of completely individualized attention from an accomplished veteran? Who does not love to share information and expertise? Who does not feel pleased to see someone develop on the job as a result of their encouragement? What manager does not get excited about improved productivity? Workplace mentoring is an explicit one-to-one learning relationship between a person who wants to improve job or career skills and a person who can help him or her do that. When executives, managers and employees consistently share knowledge and skills, they create a high performance organization. This book is about building competitive advantage, one person at a time. Common Sense Workplace Mentoring draws together Susan's firsthand research and experiences with organizations that use mentoring as a key strategy. Some readers have said: "After reading Susan's recipe for successful mentoring, why wouldn't you incorporate it into your workplace?" "I'll never separate 'mentor' and 'boss' again." "This book will stay on my desk and I will use it continuously."

The twentieth century has been an era of perpetual growth and development for Black women in American society. Black women today are continuing to move from being predefined objects to becoming self-defining subjects. Books by cultural critics bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins, and Paula Giddings are the order of discussion in academic settings across the U.S. At the same time, Black women's fiction by authors including Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and Terry McMillan are the focus of paper presentations, articles, and feature films which explore self-definition. Compiling some of the best scholarship and qualitative methodologies since Black Women in America in 1990, Nature of a Sistuh reconsiders some of the constructions made of Black women by "others" in higher education, corporate offices, organized religions, television and other mass media. Written by and about women of color, this book examines and chronicles their struggle to become subjects who chart their own successes and futures. This collection of seventeen essays is edited by McDonald and Ford-Ahmed and is arranged into four parts providing stirring personal testimony, theoretical frameworks, and an array of methods for resisting the oppression of limited and one-dimensional representations of themselves by others.

Mid Life Issues And The Workplace Of The 90s written by Shirley Waskel and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-05-30 with Business & Economics categories.
The median age of workers in the United States will reach 36 by the year 2000. The number of workers between the ages of 35 and 47 will increase by 38 percent, while those aged 48 to 53 will grow by a staggering 67 percent. This middle aging of the work force brings with it unique employee issues and personal mid-life stresses that affect work performance. Shirley A. Waskel suggests that as the number of workers aged 35 to 55 increases, human resource managers will have to deal increasingly with problems that once applied only to a minority. Her book addresses the need to retain mid-life workers, see them as assets, and provide avenues for them to enhance their own sense of self. Mid-life as a developmental stage has come into its own in the past fifteen years. Waskel presents the mid-life individual as an adult who has brought along the behaviors, coping mechanisms, sense of self, and problems developed from infancy to the present day. Her study explains the problems that mid-life employees can bring to the workplace, the need to recognize how the worker produces, and the recognition that mid-life is a time when people begin to deal more intensely with issues left over from childhood. These childhood issues, added to workplace problems such as age, sex and race discrimination, sexual harassment, ineffective job placement, and lack of appreciation for the skills and expertise of the mid-life employee can all work against achieving a highly productive work force. Waskel discusses why no organization with these types of problems can expect to thrive and suggests programs (such as the Employee Assistance Program) and counseling groups as ways for human resource specialists to meet the challenge of mid-life employee difficulties. Mid-life Issues and the Workplace of the 90s is an indispensable guide for students and teachers of business, psychology, counseling, and sociology, as well as mid-life workers and human resource specialists.
