Although devoted to constructions of good codes for error control, secrecy or data compression, the emphasis is on the first direction. Introduces a number of important classes of error-detecting and error-correcting codes as well as their decoding methods. Background material on modern algebra is presented where required. The role of error-correcting codes in modern cryptography is treated as are data compression and other topics related to information theory. The definition-theorem proof style used in mathematics texts is employed through the book but formalism is avoided wherever possible.

One of the most important key technologies for digital communication systems as well as storage media is coding theory. It provides a means to transmit information across time and space over noisy and unreliable communication channels. Coding Theory: Algorithms, Architectures and Applications provides a concise overview of channel coding theory and practice, as well as the accompanying signal processing architectures. The book is unique in presenting algorithms, architectures, and applications of coding theory in a unified framework. It covers the basics of coding theory before moving on to discuss algebraic linear block and cyclic codes, turbo codes and low density parity check codes and space-time codes. Coding Theory provides algorithms and architectures used for implementing coding and decoding strategies as well as coding schemes used in practice especially in communication systems. Feature of the book include: Unique presentation-like style for summarising main aspects Practical issues for implementation of coding techniques Sound theoretical approach to practical, relevant coding methodologies Covers standard coding schemes such as block and convolutional codes, coding schemes such as Turbo and LDPC codes, and space time codes currently in research, all covered in a common framework with respect to their applications. This book is ideal for postgraduate and undergraduate students of communication and information engineering, as well as computer science students. It will also be of use to engineers working in the industry who want to know more about the theoretical basics of coding theory and their application in currently relevant communication systems

The topics covered in this book, written by researchers at the forefront of their field, represent some of the most relevant research areas in modern coding theory: codes and combinatorial structures, algebraic geometric codes, group codes, quantum codes, convolutional codes, network coding and cryptography. The book includes a survey paper on the interconnections of coding theory with constrained systems, written by an invited speaker, as well as 37 cutting-edge research communications presented at the 4th International Castle Meeting on Coding Theory and Applications (4ICMCTA), held at the Castle of Palmela in September 2014. The event’s scientific program consisted of four invited talks and 39 regular talks by authors from 24 different countries. This conference provided an ideal opportunity for communicating new results, exchanging ideas, strengthening international cooperation, and introducing young researchers into the coding theory community.

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the proceedings of the second International Castle Meeting on Coding Theory and its Applications, held at La Mota Castle in Medina del Campo. The event provided a forum for the exchange of results and ideas, which we hope will foster future collaboration. The ?rst meeting was held in 1999, and, encouraged by that experience, we now intend to hold the meeting every three years. Springer kindly accepted to publish the proceedings volume you have in your hands in their LNCS series. The topics were selected to cover some of the areas of research in Coding Theory that are currently receiving the most attention. The program consisted of a mixture of invited and submitted talks, with the focus on quality rather than quantity. A total of 34 papers were submitted to themeeting.Afteracarefulreviewprocessconductedbythescienti?ccommittee aided by external reviewers, we selected 14 of these for inclusion in the current volume, along with 5 invited papers. The program was further augmented by the remaining invited papers in addition to papers on recent results, printed in a separate volume. We would like to thank everyone who made this meeting possible by helping with the practical and scienti?c preparations: the organization committee, the scienti?c committee, the invited speakers, and the many external reviewers who shall remain anonymous. I would especially like to mention the General Advisor ofthe meeting, ØyvindYtrehus. Finally Iextend mygratitudeto allthe authors and participants who contributed to this meeting.

This volume contains papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) held at Il Ciocco, Italy, in October 1987. The volume results from the activities of the NATO Special Scientific Programme on Sensory Systems for Robotic control. Most of the contributors are recognized leaders in their fields, some from the robotics community, others with a more general background. The main topics covered are: - Modeling techniques: general kinematic and dynamic issues - Sensor signal processing - Force control - Further control topics - Vision based control - Further kinematic and dynamic issues - Computational issues - Learning from sensor input. Also included are brief reports of the roundtable discussions which sought to determine important directions of research in this area.

Although its roots lie in information theory, the applications of coding theory now extend to statistics, cryptography, and many areas of pure mathematics, as well as pervading large parts of theoretical computer science, from universal hashing to numerical integration. Introduction to Coding Theory introduces the theory of error-correcting codes in a thorough but gentle presentation. Part I begins with basic concepts, then builds from binary linear codes and Reed-Solomon codes to universal hashing, asymptotic results, and 3-dimensional codes. Part II emphasizes cyclic codes, applications, and the geometric desciption of codes. The author takes a unique, more natural approach to cyclic codes that is not couched in ring theory but by virtue of its simplicity, leads to far-reaching generalizations. Throughout the book, his discussions are packed with applications that include, but reach well beyond, data transmission, with each one introduced as soon as the codes are developed. Although designed as an undergraduate text with myriad exercises, lists of key topics, and chapter summaries, Introduction to Coding Theory explores enough advanced topics to hold equal value as a graduate text and professional reference. Mastering the contents of this book brings a complete understanding of the theory of cyclic codes, including their various applications and the Euclidean algorithm decoding of BCH-codes, and carries readers to the level of the most recent research.
