Our world is constantly changing, governed by continuity, dynamic interactions and boundary conditions. For many coasts, the common denominators contributing to these changes are sand, waves, tides, salt gradients, and human interaction, all themes that are treated in this valuable textbook.Confining itself to essentials, the coverage reflects centuries of theoretical and practical knowledge of Dutch coastal engineers. Focussing, where applicable, on linear theory, the book shows how the essentials of local coastal behavior can be reproduced and predicted.

This is a comprehensive reference text for senior undergraduates, graduate students, and instructors and working professionals in the coastal field. It provides a thorough survey of a present state of geomorphological knowledge across a very broad spectrum of coastal types, including topics, such as the form and processes operating on cold coasts, deltas, cohesive cold coasts, and coral reefs, that have rarely been included in general coastal texts. There is also a detailed discussion on the nature, origin, and transport of beach sediment, and the possible effects of future sea-level changes on coastal environments. Anthropological influences and managerial implications are discussed in several of the chapters. All the material draws upon up-to-date research and scientific findings.

Over 100 field, laboratory, theoretical, and numerical studies focus narrowly on natural shorelines and adjacent regions. They consider such aspects as sand suspension, wave propagation in shallow water, boundary layers and mixing, sediment transport predictors, remote sensing and video, wave-current interaction, longshore currents, beach profiles, rip currents, effects of coastal structures, beach nourishment, morphodynamic modelling, tidal inlets, wave-induced circulation, shingle and mixed grain size, breaking waves, megaripples and bars, nearshore circulation patterns, regional studies, long-term morphodynamics, swash and intertidal, groupiness and long waves, and seabed effects. This textbook on Coastal Dynamics focuses on the interrelation between physical wave, flow and sediment transport phenomena and the resulting morphodynamics of a wide variety of coastal systems. The textbook is unique in that it explicitly connects the dynamics of open coasts and tidal basins; not only is the interaction between open coasts and tidal basins of basic importance for the evolution of most coastal systems, but describing the similarities between their physical processes is highly instructive as well. This textbook emphasizes these similarities to the benefit of understanding shared processes such as nonlinearities in flow and sediment transport. Some prior knowledge with respect to the dynamics of flow, waves and sediment transport is recommended. The authors would like to track the reach and use of this Open Textbook. Therefore, they would be very pleased if you could fill out a form to provide information on your intended use of this book. The form also provides options to subscribe for update notifications and give feedback.

Dynamics Of The Coastal Zone written by Matteo Postacchini and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-19 with Technology & Engineering categories.
The coastal zone is the host to many human activities, which have significantly increased in the last decades. However, sea level rise and more frequent storm events severely affect beaches and coastal structures, with negative consequences and dramatic impacts on coastal communities. These aspects add to typical coastal problems, like flooding and beach erosion, which already leading to large economic losses and human fatalities. Modeling is thus fundamental for an exhaustive understanding of the nearshore region in the present and future environment. Innovative tools and technologies may help to better understand coastal processes in terms of hydrodynamics, sediment transport, bed morphology, and their interaction with coastal structures. This book collects several contributions focusing on nearshore dynamics, and span among several time and spatial scales using both physical and numerical approaches. The aim is to describe the most recent advances in coastal dynamics.

Ninety-two proceedings papers from the 1995 conference reviewing large-scale field and laboratory experiments in the European Community, Japan, the US, and the former Soviet-Bloc countries of Russia, Bulgaria, East Germany, and Poland. These volume particularly features the discussions from those latter countries since most of their experiments have not been, until now, released to the West. In more specific terms, the papers report findings in wave motion in vegetated and non-vegetated coastal zone, surf zone modeling, planform considerations of beach nourishment, swash dynamics, runup, low- frequency motion, longshore currents, cross-shore transport, and profile evolution.
