Cloud computing is a model where computing resources (processors, storage, software) are offered as a utility from an indistinct location and boundaries to the user. Adoption of Cloud computing in recent years has gained momentum within various avenues round the globe due to its characteristics like elasticity, virtualization and pay-as-you-go pricing. In tune with the trend various companies have evolved which are offering web applications. These companies provide the system required to host the application to users on lease which saves them from purchasing. The book combines both theoretical and practical perspectives of cloud computing with a slant towards library and information centres. The book describes in detail about various companies which are providing cloud computing solutions and infrastructure for library and information centres. Intiatives of OCLC and best practices adopted in other libraries around the world has been discussed at length. Many avenues of the implementation of cloud computing has been identified in the present study. Various initiatives of the library professionals to move their internet sites, their integrated library system for cataloguing and acquisition, Cloud based library apps, Cloud based Stack Map and their repository systems and inter library loan systems to the cloud has been mentioned. The book further proposes a model which may serve as a blueprint for implementation of cloud computing technologies in libraries. With the timely publication of book, library and information service practitioners after going through the book can outsource the task of maintaining the computer infrastructure and focus on their mission to serve people with right information at right point of time.

"In a time when the term "cloud computing" seems tagged to almost any kind of technology product to make it sound new and trendy, Cloud Computing for Libraries distinguishes the substance from the hype to make you well-equipped to understand and evaluate its merits, risks, and value to your organization. Cloud computing is making it possible to separate the process of building an infrastructure for service provisioning from the library of providing end user services. Cloud computing provides people the way to share distributed resources and services that belong to di erent organizations or sites. Cloud computing share distributed resources via the network in the open environment. It is a virtual pool of computing resources through internet. Every day we make use of computing and information resources through a web browser powered by some distant and di use infrastructure. This model has become routine for personal use—e-mail, word processing, social networking, photo sharing. In more recent months and years cloud computing has entered the library technology sphere. Cloud computing brings the opportunity for libraries to shift away from the need to own and operate their own servers to power their core automation applications and to instead shift to gaining similar functionality through web-based services. In order to develop technology strategies in this context, it's essential for libraries to have a solid understanding of this new technology landscape, to move beyond a vague awareness of cloud computing to a more nuanced, well-informed understanding of such concepts as software-as-a-service, infra-structure-as-a-service, and platform-as-a-service and the relative advantages, caveats, and risks." -- from preface.

Cloud computing can save your library time and money by enabling convenient, on-demand network access to resources like servers and applications. Libraries that take advantage of the cloud have fewer IT headaches because data centres provide continuous updates and mobility that standard computing cannot easily provide - which means less time and energy spent on software, and more time and energy to devote to the library's day-to-day mission and services. In this timely book, leading Library and Information Technology Association experts demystify language, deflate hype and provide library-specific examples of real-world success that you can emulate to guarantee efficiency and savings. Among other valuable features, it will help you: select data access and file sharing services; build digital repositories; and, utilize other cloud computing applications in your library. Working together with this one-stop guide for implementing cloud computing, you and the cloud can save time and money, and build the information destination your users will love.

As remote work has become routine, cloud-based technology tools have become increasingly necessary to communicate with other library staff and with faculty and staff to continue providing seamless and uninterrupted access to library resources and collections for our campus community. Cloud-based technology tools such as Google Forms and Google Sheets are used to gather faculty requests for collection development, tools such as Tableau are used to illustrate material budget balances, and platforms such as Trello have been adopted to track subscription renewal cycles and manage other projects. This guide discusses the benefits of using these powerful cloud-based and little to no additional cost technology tools through the lens of a particular area in librarianship such as documentation, data and project management, communication, data storage, and data visualization. While the real-world examples provided throughout focus on technical services staff operations, specifically acquisitions and electronic collection management, each tool’s features and use cases are transferable among all areas of librarianship. This guide provides insights into how collaborative, dynamic, and accessible these cloud-based solutions are for a technologically shifting workplace as well as considers the challenges to adopting cloud-based solutions such as administrative buy-in, aversion to change, and steeper learning curves as well. Readers will gain practical experiential examples that have been instrumental in creating efficiencies in collection management workflows for technical services staff. The use cases illustrated exemplify enhancements that librarians can incorporate into their own collection management practices to further engage with their colleagues, their patrons, and their larger communities more effectively and efficiently.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Information Management, , course: Communication Engineering, language: English, abstract: Over the years, there has been the need to improve the level of services provided by traditional libraries in the areas of resource accessibility and management. This is in a bid to address the challenges and inconveniences in accessing and managing the library resources. A viable means of achieving this purpose is by deployment of digital libraries. In this project, a digital library prototype based on cloud computing will be developed to demonstrate the viability of deploying and running cloud based digital libraries in Nigerian higher institutions, to curb the challenges encountered in accessing resources in traditional libraries by providing ubiquitous access to library resources. Developing the digital library will comprise of two design phases viz; developing the library website and designing a local intranet on which the website will be hosted. The website will be developed using web scripting and programming languages such as Hypertext Mark-Up Language (HTML), JavaScript, and Hypertext Pre-Processor (PHP) etc. while the local intranet is a network of computers and other Wi-Fi enabled digital devices and a wireless access point. The network will be configured and the digital library website hosted on a dedicated server which provides services to the user devices through the access point. At the end of this project, a prototype of cloud based digital library will be developed. On the library website, users can perform basic operations such as registering with the library and viewing the content of materials in the library collections. While the library administrator performs functions of book uploads and user authentication. This project, though demonstrated as a prototype, shows that deploying cloud based digital libraries in Nigerian higher institution will curb the challenges associated with traditional libraries.

This report examines closely how academic, public and special libraries are using cloud computing services. It looks at use of specific services from Amazon, Google, Rackspace, DuraCloud, DropBox and many others, as well as more general questions regarding the use of cloud services, such as security issues, overall cost, impact on IT staff, data reliability and other issues. The 76-page report helps libraries and IT staff to answer questions such as: what has been the experience of libraries with cloud computing to date? What are they using it for? What do they plan to use it for? How satisfied are they with their experience? What has been and will be the impact on the library budget?
