Extensive empirical research has documented the value of play for both cognitive and social development. Despite the evidence, educators and policy makers are eliminating the free play periods that have long been a central part of a young child's experience in preschool and childcare. In Children's Play, leading experts in play research, child development, and early childhood education examine recent policy decisions and demonstrate the importance of play in helping children learn basic literacy skills, social awareness, and creative problem solving. Readers will also find a comprehensive summary of the developmental benefits of play, examples of how research has been applied in practice, a multicultural perspective on play, and ideas for how to play imaginative games with children.

As adults, we often underestimate the value that play has in developing children both physically and mentally. In the first few years of a child¿s life, the brain is growing at a rapid rate and play cannot be overvalued at this time as it allows a child to engage and make sense of the world. Child¿s Play is an activity book filled with play ideas for parents to enjoy with their toddlers, from 12 months through to three years of age. Each game offers parents the chance to relish, encourage and assist in their child¿s key developmental stage, and all activities are based on sound techniques of early-childhood education. They are presented with guidelines and suggestions that progress in terms of difficulty, and no specialised knowledge or equipment is necessary. From encouraging your infant to explore the sense of touch and increase their coordination to performing action songs and discovering the garden or local park, Child¿s Play offers children and parents the chance to learn and play together.

This innovative book finally takes seriously the need for anthropologists to produce in-depth ethnographies of children's play. In examining the subject from a cross-cultural perspective, the author argues that our understanding of the way children transform their environment to create make-believe is enhanced by viewing their creations as oral poetry. The result is a richly detailed ‘thick description' of how pretence is socially mediated and linguistically constructed, how children make sense of their own play, how play relates to other imaginative genres in Huli life, and the relationship between play and cosmology. Informed by theoretical approaches in the anthropology of play, developmental and child psychology, philosophy and phenomenology and drawing on ethnographic data from Melanesia, the book analyzes the sources for imitation, the kinds of identities and roles emulated, and the structure of collaborative make-believe talk to reveal the complex way in which children invoke their experiences of the world and re-invent them as types of virtual reality. Particular importance is placed on how the figures of the ogre and trickster are articulated. The author demonstrates that while the concept of ‘imagination' has been the cornerstone of Western intellectual traditions from Plato to Postmodernism, models of child fantasy play have always intruded into such theorizing because of children's unique capacity to throw into relief our understanding of the relationship between representation and reality.
