This important and original book places the case study in international business research in its historical context, critically evaluates current case study practices in the field and proposes a more pluralistic future for case research within international business and international management research. While the case study is the most popular qualitative research strategy in the field, only a narrow selection of possible approaches is currently used. IB and IM researchers typically rely on a case study approach that could be characterized as 'qualitative positivism'. The editors and contributors look beyond this disciplinary convention and encourage greater pluralism in IB and IM case research. Their key argument is that increased awareness of prevailing disciplinary conventions - and their limitations - increases the potential for methodological innovation and versatility in case research. The contributions provide critical, novel and innovative perspectives on the case study in IB and IM research. The book offers inspiration to case authors and an authoritative methodological reference for those publishing and reviewing case research. It will also be highly regarded by postgraduate and doctoral students in IB and IM as well as both qualitative and quantitative researchers in the field.

Qualitative case study research has frequently been criticised for being less systematic and objective than other approaches. Ambiguity in the way case studies are selected, empirically conducted and analysed, often exists and can hinder the positive dissemination of research. This paper aims to outline how case study research can be undertaken using the example of the authors' current case study research into interfirm services linkages between UK multinational subsidiaries and local firms in China and Korea. A particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of case studies and the benefits of computer aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). An integrative approach is taken through the use of Nvivo software. It is argued that the use of Nvivo can help researchers systematise and order data, enabling a more thorough and reliable analysis. If qualitative case study research is to become more accepted and publishable, its transparency must be improved. The use of a standardized type of data analysis software may go some way towards helping researchers achieve this goal.

Despite having a relatively recent history compared to other social sciences, the business and management field has proliferated into a number of largely independent disciplines. These include accounting, corporate governance, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource management, international business and international management, leadership, management and business history, marketing and retail, operations and logistics, organizational behaviour, public management and governance, and strategy. Each of these disciplines has its own methodological predilections and as a corollary, a view of what constitutes a case study, where case studies should feature in a research project and the relative usefulness of case study research. Given this breadth of disciplines, only a provisional definition of a case study will be provided at this point; namely, a case study is research into a phenomenon, ...
