A review of norwegian activities in the major areas of cancer control is presented. As regards primary prevention the efforts have concen- trated mainly on radiation hygiene and anti-smoking programmes. Early detection activities in norway have centered around 2 large mass-cam- paigns, one for breast cancer and 1 for cervical cancer. As regards cancer diagnostic services the explicit norwegian policy has been to decentralize these as much as possible. Megavoltage radiotherapy, ra- diosurgery and, to a lesser degree, chemotherapy have for many years been centralized in norway. A national cancer registration programme, with obligatory reporting of cases, has covered the whole country since 1952. This material now handled by automated data processing methods, has extensive uses in cancer control both for planning, surveillance, evaluation, and research purposes. A review is given of its main activities and experiences. The major part of cancer research is carried out by 3 university hospitals and the norsk hydro's institute for cancer research.
