Business and Development Studies: Issues and Perspectives provides a comprehensive collection of cutting-edge theoretical and empirical contributions to the emerging field of business and development studies. Compared to more traditional business-school accounts of business in developing countries which focus on the challenges and opportunities of doing business in developing countries, this anthology explores whether, how, and under what conditions business contributes to the achievement of economic, social, and environmental goals in developing countries. The book consolidates the current status of academic work on business and development, identifies state of the art in relation to this academic field, and establishes a future research agenda for ‘business and development studies’ as an emerging academic discipline within the social sciences. The book will be of interest to researchers and students, including economists, geographers, sociologists, political scientists, corporate social responsibility specialists, and development scholars who are seeking an in-depth overview of current debates about the role of business as a development agent in the Global South. The book is also of relevance to practitioners that are engaged in work with the private sector seeking to enhance the positive effects and minimize the negative economic, social, and environmental consequences of business activity in the Global South.

Business studies and development studies have evolved relatively independently of each other - business studies occupied with profit maximizing strategies and the activities of entrepreneurs, firms and value chains, and development studies with economic, social and political development strategies of countries and regions. However, as more and more of the world's value-adding activities take place in developing countries and as MNCs increasingly incorporate developing countries' markets and resources in their strategies, business studies has taken a growing interest in the particular conditions of local and foreign firms doing business in such environments. Simultaneously, as the limitations of state led development strategies have become apparent and as market ideology has become prevalent in a growing number of countries, development studies has directed growing attention towards the role of entrepreneurship, firm strategy, private sector development and foreign direct investment as vehicles for economic and social development. In other words, both fields approach business in development from different sides. This paper seeks to identify themes related to the firm in developing countries as taken up by both business and development studies. We suggest the themes of common interest and potential convergence to be those of market failures, institutions, entrepreneurship, clusters, and firm internationalization. The paper illustrates that there are substantial opportunities for cross-fertilization between the two bodies of academic enquiry, and indeed, that without a conversation between the two literatures in the era of globalization, the analytical and predictive power of both may be seriously impaired.

This book is about business in Kenya. Starting from theories of institutions as formal and informal rules that shape human behaviour, it examines the institutional context for business and the ways in which firms and other organisations are formed, operate, and interact. Some of the institutions are internal to Kenya, but others are regional, continental or global in their origins and impact. The book examines how these institutions interact to create incentives for certain types of investment, and disincentives for others. It also discusses the strategies that government can adopt to strengthen the Kenyan business system and make it more competitive. The book originated in a three-year research project on Business Systems in Africa carried out as part of a collaboration between the Institute for Development Studies of the University of Nairobi, and the Centre for Development Research, Copenhagen. The studies involved more than a dozen researchers in an examination of the influence of political, economic and social institutions on Kenyan firms of all sizes. Its approach, which uses sectors of the economy as lenses through which to view the business system, has provided a rich tapestry of information useful for policymakers, students and scholars. The editors are based at the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi. Dorothy McCormick is Associate Research Professor and Director of the Institute. She specialises in industrial development with particular emphasis on micro and small enterprises. Patrick O. Alila is Research Professor and was the Institute's Director from 1995 to 2001. Trained in political science and development administration, he specialises in rural development and local level institutions. Mary Omosa is Senior Research Fellow and University of Nairobi UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair. Her major research focus is on development sociology and rural livelihoods.

State Business Relations And Economic Development In Africa And India written by Kunal Sen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-16 with categories.
When the state and business interact effectively they can promote a more efficient allocation of scarce resources, appropriate industrial policy and a more effective and prioritised removal of key obstacles to growth, than when the two sides fail to co-operate or engage in harmful collusion. This book, based on original empirical research undertaken in Africa and India, addresses what constitutes the effectiveness of state-business relations, what explains their formation and evolution over time and whether effective state-business relations matter for economic performance. Analysing the effects of state-business relations on economic performance at both the macro and micro levels, the book concludes that where effective state-business relations are established either through formal or informal institutional patterns and relationships the growth effects are generally positive. Establishing, sustaining and renewing effective state-business relations are political processes. The better organized the business community and the government are for purposes of such relations, the more effective state-business relations will be in negotiating growth enhancing policies. The book is of interest to researchers in the fields of development studies, management, economics and political science.
