One of the most significant challenges facing the international community today is how to stabilize and rebuild societies emerging from civil wars, and this book, which includes both theoretical discussions and empirical applications, considers the various factors of peacebuilding. As it addresses several pertinent academic debates—relating to international interventions and local ownership, international and local conceptions of gender equality, and the legal aspects of peace implementation—this account demonstrates how some postwar countries have made significant strides towards peace and democracy while others have experienced a return to war. A policy-relevant topic, Building Peace, Creating Conflict? will appeal to students and scholars of international relations and peace studies, as well as to practitioners involved in peacebuilding efforts in war-affected countries.

Peacebuilding In The Asia Pacific written by Carmela Lutmar and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-04 with Political Science categories.

This book explores theories of conflict and peacebuilding and applies them to case studies from the Asia Pacific region, seeking to shift attention to the inherency of conflict, the constant danger of re-emergence, and the need to establish mechanisms to resolve it. The authors argue that the central focus of peacebuilding should not be state-building per se, but rather the creation of effective mechanisms for peaceful resolution of both past and newly emerging conflicts. To do so, it is important to consider the entire process of creating peace, to contemplate the linkages between conflict, resolution, and post-conflict peacebuilding, rather than focus only on the period of institution-building.

Individuals can make a difference working for peace worldwide. That is the message of People Building Peace II, an inspiring collection of stories of how ?ordinary? men and women have played a crucial part in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.Thematic chapters, illustrated with compelling case studies, present new trends in the role of civil society in conflict transformation. The cases reflect the variety of activities initiated and sustained by a broad range of actors, including women?s groups, youth groups, and faith-based organizations. Such topics as reconciliation, dialogue, networking, and traditional methods of conflict resolution are among the topics throughly explored, as are the successful initiatives of lesser-known NGOs.The resulting rich tapestry, an outcome of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict, is an invaluable compendium of best practices and lessons learned, and at the same time a stirring call to action.Paul van Tongeren is founder and executive director of the European Centre for Conflict Prevention (ECCP). Integrated Peacebuilding written by Craig Zelizer and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-19 with Political Science categories.

Integrated Peacebuilding addresses the importance of weaving peacebuilding methods into diverse sectors including development, humanitarian assistance, gender, business, media, health, and the environment—areas where such work is needed the most. Incorporating peacebuilding approaches in these fields is critical for transforming today's protracted conflicts into tomorrow's sustainable peace. Covering both theory and practice, Dr. Zelizer and his team of leading academics and practitioners present original essays discussing the infrastructure of the peacebuilding field—outlining key actors, donors, and underlying motivations—as well as the ethical dilemmas created by modern conflict. Exploring both the challenges and lessons to be found in this emerging field, Integrated Peacebuilding is perfect for courses on peacebuilding, conflict resolution, international development, and related fields.

Security Sector Reform And Post Conflict Peacebuilding written by Albrecht Schnabel and has been published by UNU this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Business & Economics categories.

Military and police forces play a crucial role in the long-term success of rebuilding efforts in post-conflict societies. Yet, while charged with the long-term task of providing a security environment conducive to rebuilding war-torn societies, internal security structures tend to lack civilian and democratic control, internal cohesion and effectiveness, and public credibility. They must be placed under democratic control and restructured and retrained to become an asset, not a liability, in the long-term peacebuilding process. External actors from other nations, regional organizations, and the United Nations can be of assistance in this process by creating a basic security environment, preventing remnants of armed groups from spoiling the fragile peacebuilding process, and by facilitating reform of the local security sector. This book offers examples and analyses by an international group of academics and practitioners with direct experiences with security sector reform programs. The case studies offer the reader a useful laboratory in which comparisons can be made and observations tested. It will be useful to policymakers interested in understanding the complexity of addressing security sector reform and civil-military relations.--W. Andy Knight, University of Alberta, Canada.
