Her Excellency, The Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, shares her thoughts on contemporary Australia. Her Excellency's lecture series, 'Back to Grassroots', will comprise four 30 minute lectures titled: Joining the neighbourhood: a personal story of equal rights advocacy; Watching the women: the powerful role of Australian women; Australians at their best: courage, compassion and resilience in everyday life; and Advance Australia Fair: looking to the future of Australian citizenship. "I am delighted to be giving the 2013 Boyer Lectures, contributing to a national conversation that has been hosted by the ABC for more than half a century now," said Her Excellency. "Like the best sort of conversation it has taken Australians down countless paths-enthralling, challenging, unworn paths. My hope is to open up yet another pathway: one that speaks to the importance of human rights in building neighbourhood, community and citizenship.""It is an honour to have the Governor-General present this year's Boyer Lecture series. Her distinguished and multifaceted career as an academic, lawyer, community and human rights advocate and vice-regal representative in Australia will provide for diverse and insightful content, and I am sure I can speak for all Australians in saying that we very much look forward to her sharing her thoughts on contemporary Australia."Each year the ABC invites a prominent Australian to present the result of his or her work and thinking on major social, scientific or cultural issues in a series of radio talks in November known as the Boyer Lectures.the annual Boyer Lecture series began in 1959 and is named after the late Sir Richard Boyer, a former Chairman of the ABC. Over the years featured speakers have come from a very broad range of disciplines and interests. While leadership is an over-used term today, how it is defined for women and the contexts in which it emerges remains elusive. Moreover, women are exhorted to exercise leadership, but occupying leadership positions has its challenges. Issues of access, acceptable behaviour and the development of skills to be successful leaders are just some of them. Diversity in Leadership: Australian women, past and presentprovides a new understanding of the historical and contemporary aspects of Indigenous and non-Indigenous women’s leadership in a range of local, national and international contexts. It brings interdisciplinary expertise to the topic from leading scholars in a range of fields and diverse backgrounds. The aims of the essays in the collection document the extent and diverse nature of women’s social and political leadership across various pursuits and endeavours within democratic political structures.

These days, families come in all shapes and sizes. They move from one state to create a family in another. They combine into new homes, take holidays with blends of children and parents from different households. They invent routines and rituals to establish their own rhythms. And don't forget the double sets of school uniforms and pyjamas under different roofs. Welcome to the new normal of family life for many Australians. It is a path Chloe Shorten has walked. Chloe was surprised at the lack of helpful information and unexpected tripwires for those not fitting the traditional cookie-cutter model. She was also heartened by the sensible advice she unearthed, the resilience of her children and the joy of watching her husband become a father three times over. Chloe tells of her own quest to create a new normal. Honest, sincere and warm hearted, this is a story of the modern household and explores the idea of who qualifies as 'a family' in the twenty-first century.

Contemporary Australian Literature written by Nicholas Birns and has been published by Sydney University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-01 with Literary Criticism categories.
Australia has been seen as a land of both punishment and refuge. Australian literature has explored these controlling alternatives, and vividly rendered the landscape on which they transpire. Twentieth-century writers left Australia to see the world; now Australia’s distance no longer provides sanctuary. But today the global perspective has arrived with a vengeance. In Contemporary Australian Literature: A World Not Yet Dead, Nicholas Birns tells the story of how novelists, poets and critics, from Patrick White to Hannah Kent, from Alexis Wright to Christos Tsiolkas, responded to this condition. With rancour, concern and idealism, modern Australian literature conveys a tragic sense of the past yet an abiding vision of the way forward. Birns paints a vivid picture of a rich Australian literary voice – one not lost to the churning of global markets, but in fact given new life by it. Contrary to the despairing of the critics, Australian literary identity continues to flourish. And as Birns finds, it is not one thing, but many. "In this remarkable, bold and fearless book, Nicholas Birns contests how literary cultures are read, how they are constituted and what they stand for … In examining the nature of the barriers between public and private utterance, and looking outside the absurdity of the rules of genre, Birns has produced a redemptive analysis that leaves hope for revivifying a world not yet dead." - John Kinsella

Professor Marcia Langton's 2012 Boyer Lectures discuss the dependency of Aboriginal businesses and not-for-profit corporations on the resources industry and their resultant vulnerability to economic downturns. 'My aim with the 53rd Boyer Lectures has been to inject new ideas and new ways of thinking about the status of Indigenous people in Australia and about the impact of the mining boom in the Aboriginal domain. My hope is that my interpretation of the economic impacts of the mining boom and some facts about our economic history are introduced into the national conversation about Aboriginal people, and thereby encourage a more sophisticated view than the archetypal one of the native as perpetual victim with no hope.'When W.E.H. Stanner delivered the Boyer Lectures in 1968, 'After the Dreaming: Black And White Australians - An Anthropologist's View', he gave credence, perhaps inadvertently, to the widely held assumption at that time that Aboriginal life was incommensurate with modern economic life. today, the expectation is quite the reverse.the emergence of an Aboriginal middle class in Australia in the last two to three decades has gone largely unnoticed. there are hundreds of Aboriginal businesses and Aboriginal not-for-profit corporations with income streams, delivering economic outcomes to communities on an unprecedented scale.the 53rd Boyer Lectures, presented by Professor Marcia Langton AM, is an investigation into the dependency of Aboriginal businesses and not-for-profit corporations on the resources industry, and their resultant vulnerability to economic downturns.
