Caught between underdevelopment, poverty and environmental degradation, and the need for exploiting their natural resources for development, Africa has, during the last two decades, been engaged in a serious effort to integrate environment and development. The nine case studies (Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Sudan, Uganda and Zambia) presented in this book explore the complexity involved in environmental planning and policy in one of the World's poorest regions. The authors articulate an informed debate, with new conclusions and alternative policy recommendations.

Computational Models in the Economics of Environment and Development provides a step-by-step guide in designing, developing, and solving non-linear environment-development models. It accomplishes this by focusing on applied models, using real examples as case studies. Additionally, it gives examples of developing policy interventions based on quantitative model results. Finally, it uses a simple computer program, GAMS, to develop and solve models. This book is targeted towards university lecturers and students in economic modeling and sustainable development, but is also of particular interest to researchers at sustainable development research institutes and policy makers at international sustainable development policy institutions such the World Bank, UNDP, and UNEP.

Wildlife Tourism Environmental Learning And Ethical Encounters written by Ismar Borges de Lima and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-13 with Science categories.

This book outlines the status quo of worldwide wildlife tourism and its impacts on planning, management, knowledge, awareness, behaviour and attitudes related to wildlife encounters. It sets out to fill the considerable gaps in our knowledge on wildlife tourism, applied ecology, and environmental education, providing comprehensive information on and an interdisciplinary approach to effective management in wildlife tourism. Examining the intricacies, challenges, and lessons learned in a meaningful and rewarding tourism niche, this interdisciplinary book comprehensively examines the major potentials and controversies in the wildlife tourism industry. Pursuing an insightful, provocative and hands-on approach, it primarily addresses two questions: ‘Can we reconcile the needs of the wildlife tourism industry, biodiversity conservation, ecological learning and animal ethics issues?’ and ‘What is the Future of the Wildlife Tourism Industry?’. Though primaril y intended as a research text, it also offers a valuable resource for a broad readership, which includes university and training students, researchers, scholars, tourism practitioners and professionals, planners and managers, as well as the staff of government agencies.

Climate Change And Tourism In Southern Africa written by Jarkko Saarinen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-30 with Science categories.

This book explores the nature of climate change in southern Africa, its impacts on tourism and the resilience, adaptation and governance needs in various tourism operations and environments. Previous studies on climate change and tourism have mainly focused on the Global North and specific forms of tourism such as snow-based winter activities. Drawing on case studies from a wide range of countries including South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, this book fills this lacuna by describing and analysing the climate change and tourism nexus in the southern African context. The book begins by providing an overview of the current and estimated impacts of climate change to the tourism industry in the region, highlighting the deepening socio-economic inequities, and environmental and social injustices. It focuses on the importance of sustainable tourism in tackling these issues and highlights that resilience and robust governance and policy systems are essential for a tourism destination to successfully adapt to change. By synthesising the key lessons learned through this analysis, Climate Change and Tourism in Southern Africa also draws attention to specific adaptation and policy strategies which have value for other regions in the Global South. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, tourism and environmental policy and justice.

This volume set provides critical strategies for sustainable environmental management and biodiversity conservation in sub-Saharan Africa. They address key conservation issues in the region such as habitat loss, fragmentation, rangeland degradation, and human-wildlife conflicts. Innovative approaches in ecological modelling, climate change adaptation, and circular water systems, enhancing conservation efforts and ensuring resilience in the face of environmental changes are further examined. A comprehensive analysis of fisheries management and sustainable practices underscores their role in conserving aquatic biodiversity. Despite challenges like agricultural expansion and water scarcity, the focus on regenerative agriculture and food production systems seeks to mitigate impacts on rangelands and forests, thus supporting biodiversity conservation. Emphasizing the integration of traditional knowledge with contemporary conservation science, these volumes highlight the need for holistic, adaptive strategies and robust governance frameworks to address the complexities of biodiversity loss and environmental change. The collection is an essential resource for policymakers, researchers, and conservation practitioners dedicated to fostering sustainable livelihoods and conserving the unique ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa. Volume 1 covers the themes of biodiversity conservation in the Anthropocene and sustainable rangeland and forest management. It provides an understanding of the dual impacts of human activities on biodiversity and underscores the necessity of sustainable forest management to enhance ecosystem services vital for rural livelihoods, economic growth, and ecological health amid environmental and human pressures.

This study on the status of the environment in Botswana demonstrates that despite inadequate resources, some progress has been made to meet the objectives or mandates of the country's National Conservation Strategy. It indicates that natural resource conservation and management legislation does exist, and achievable goals have been set; however there is presently less success in minimising unsustainable resource use. It gives as the principal reason, the poor enforcement of legislation. The authors make recommendations for improvement under the headings: implementing incentives and disincentives on natural resources; involving local communities in natural conservation efforts; developing and elevating the status of the National Conservation Strategy, identifying external forces of change, enforcing environmental impact assessment legislation and eliminating overlaps within the current legislation.

There is a lack of materials on the enviroment in Botswana, and this handbook addresses that gap. In addition, enviromental education is being incorporated into the education system in Botswana. The authors, all from the Department of Enviromental Science at the University of Botswana, focus on the six issues identified in the National Conservation Strategy: pressure on water resources; rangelands pasture degradation; depletion of wood resources; overuse of veld products; and industrial/urban pollution. Conservation of wildlife is treated as an important issue also.
