The Kyanga dictionary, with English finderlist, was compiled in Nigeria over a seven year period. It forms a trilogy together with the simultaneously published Illo-Busa and Shanga dictionaries. This cluster of languages belongs to the Eastern sub-division of the Mande language family. Dictionaries of the other three languages of this cluster, Boko, Bokobaru and Busa/Bisa, ̃also compiled by the author, were published in 2004 by Lincom Europa.0The database is stem based so that any word that begins with a lexeme stem will appear as a sub-entry under that lexeme. The 5000+ head and subwords are written in Kyanga orthography, followed by phonetic representations, including tones, a part of speech label and glosses in English.0Borrowed words, etymology, synonyms and variants are given as appropriate, with the borrowings being mainly from Hausa and English. Kyanga is regarded as the oldest language in the area where it is spoken. The 50 page introduction includes an historical survey and a summary of Kyanga phonology and grammar. The author?s PhD thesis, the Boko/Busa Language Cluster describing the grammar of Boko, Bokobaru and Bisa, ̃was published by Lincom Europa in 1998.

This book proposes the reconstruction of the Proto-Niger-Congo numeral system. The emphasis is placed on providing an exhaustive account of the distribution of forms by families, groups, and branches. The big data bases used for this purpose open prospects for both working with the distribution of words that do exist and with the distribution of gaps in postulated cognates. The distribution of filled cells and gaps is a useful tool for reconstruction. Following an introduction in the first chapter, the second chapter of this book is devoted to the study of various uses of noun class markers in numeral terms. The third chapter deals with the alignment by analogy in numeral systems. Chapter 4 offers a step-by-step reconstruction of number systems of the proto-languages underlying each of the twelve major NC families, on the basis of the step-by-step-reconstruction of numerals within each family. Chapter 5 deals with the reconstruction of the Proto-Niger-Congo numeral system on the basis of the step-by-step-reconstructions offered in Chapter 4. Chapter 6 traces the history of the numerals of Proto-Niger-Congo, reconstructed in Chapter 5, in each individual family of languages.

Depuis plus de dix siècles, le monde arabe est en contact avec l'Afrique subsaharienne, notamment dans sa partie soudano-sahélienne. Cependant, tous les contacts ne sont pas aussi anciens, et tous n'ont pas été directs. En effet, certaines populations, et leurs langues, ont servi de relais à l'influence arabe. Le dictionnaire du Professeur Baldi examine le sort de plus de 3 000 étymons arabes dans environ 130 langues d'Afrique de l'Ouest. Il y a ajouté la langue la plus importante de l'Afrique de l'Est, le swahili. L'ouvrage est organisé sous la forme d'un dictionnaire arabe, suivant un ordre alphabétique arabe par racines ; l'entrée principale est donc un mot arabe, translittéré en caractères latins, et elle est suivie de tous les mots des langues africaines qui l'ont emprunté. L'ouvrage sera indispensable pour tous ceux qui font eux-mêmes des dictionnaires de langues africaines, et pour les spécialistes de la comparaison linguistique. Il servira aussi de base de référence pour les spécialistes de sciences humaines qui cherchent à délimiter aussi précisément que possible les domaines africains qui ont été enrichis par le contact avec le monde arabo-musulman.
