It is in the best interest of all concerned that tourism become sustainable and environmentally compatible. This need for "sustainable development" is and more by the responsible parties. Moreover, in the being recognised more search for solution strategies the realisation is gaining ground that tourism must be viewed as a worldwide phenomenon whose development must be co-ordinated in a co-operative effort spanning regions and continents. That the preservation of biological diversity also requires global co operation has been confirmed by over 170 countries which have already acceded to the "Convention on Biological Diversity". It is thus an important task to provide the foundations for joint action. Germany, one of the largest source countries of international tourism, must feel particularly obligated in this regard. The report published here is the result of a research project com missioned by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. The study pursued and examined the thesis that the Convention on Biological Diversity be used as a central instrument for arriving at international principles and regulations for combining nature conservation and tourism which could lead to a sustainable development of tourism. To further the discussion, the authors brought the study to a logical conclusion by working out a proposal for a "tourism protocol" additional to the existing Convention on Biodiversity. Such a protocol additional to the Convention would entail the stipulation of internationally binding implementation and regulations for achieving sustainable tourism.

This analysis provides an example of how biodiversity can be measured by means of different indicators, and how the latter can be used to assess the influence of the biodiversity profile of a region on the tourism flows towards it. Previous studies have considered environmental amenities as one of the determinants of tourism destination choice. The central hypothesis of this paper is that the destination's biodiversity profile can be considered as a key component of environmental amenities. The main objective of this study is to propose a different perspective on this topic, considering the role of biodiversity on tourists' choice of destination and duration of stay. Domestic Irish tourist flows have been chosen as a case study. The first step of the analysis required the construction of biodiversity indicators suitable for developing a biodiversity profile of each Irish county. Subsequently, a model was developed so as to explain the total number of nights spent in any location as a function of a set of explanatory variables including information about the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents, biodiversity and the landscape profile of the county of destination and features of the trip. Results show that most of the biodiversity and landscape indicators included in the analysis turn out to be statistically significant in determining tourists' choices regarding the duration of their trip. As a result, policies pursuing biodiversity conservation appear to have a positive impact on the revenue of regional tourism.

Indonesia is a favourite ecotourism destination in Southeast Asia and tourism in general plays an important role in the Indonesian economy. Being one of the world’s largest archipelagos’, with more than 17,503 islands sprawling across the Indian Ocean, Indonesia is one of the third top global megabiodiversity hotspots with rich natural ecosystems ranging from rainforests to mangrove systems and a high degree of insular endemism. The Indonesian archipelago is divided into two ecological regions – the Sundaland (Asian zoogeographical region) and Wallacea (Australasian zoogeographical region) by the Wallace line. This line runs between the islands Bali and Lombok. Indonesia also boasts of a rich marine biodiversity with 20 % of the world’s coral reefs and is biogeographically a part of the coral triangle. Nearly 45 % of Indonesia is still covered by natural ecosystems and one of the reasons for this is that only 6000 out of the 17,000 islands are permanently inhabited. While Sumatra and Java are the most popular tourist destinations, Indonesia also has one of the world’s longest coastlines with popular beaches and island resorts in Bali, Lombok and Bintan islands. The waters around these islands also provide excellent and economical diving opportunities, with a very high coral diversity as for example in Bunaken Marine National Park in the northern tip of Sulawesi island and the Raja Ampat area in west Papua which according to Conservation International claims to have the highest marine diversity. Indonesia also has a rich cultural diversity with most of these cultural sites listed as world heritage sites. Ecotourism in Indonesia can be used not only as a tool for conservation of biodiversity but also to promote sustainable development especially for the local communities. While promoting ecotourism, it should also be seen that nature and culture are not harmed or destroyed. The International German Alumni Summer School aimed at addressing the issues of ecotourism potential and development in Indonesia and other countries in South-East Asia on an interdisciplinary platform and find solutions for sustainable and practically applicable nature conservation efforts.
