Driven by the needs of scientific research practices, universities generate an enormous volume of data daily, and researchers rely on large digital data sets. The scientific community has realized that analyzing these data can have great potential to reveal new outcomes for scientific studies and discoveries. When these data become discoverable, citable, reusable, integrated, and linked with other data, their potential benefits grow (Lehnert & Hsu, 2015). These potential benefits of the application of analytics of research data are widely recognized by scholars, practitioners, and research institutions (Reichmann et al., 2021). Funding agencies and publishers have started to impose research data management requirements (National Institutes of Health, 2010; National Science Foundation, 2014; Office of Science and Technology Policy, 2013). Research data management (RDM) can be considered a general term to describe the organization of research data so it can be retrieved and reused by all the users it serves, including technical, ethical, and legal considerations (Higman & Pinfield, 2015). Research universities have started to develop services to meet funding agencies’ RDM requirements and to support data-intensive scholarship (Lynch, 2015). These services are generally named research data management services (RDMS), research data curation services, or digital curation services in universities. In this study, RDMS is used as an umbrella term for all these services. The dramatic increase in the volume of research data has caused the emergence of the term big research data (BRD; Pouchard, 2016). BRD refers to a huge volume of data with fast-growing speed and various types, complicating data handling techniques (Zhan & Widen, 2019). Management of BRD requires advanced technologies and different expertise. The adoption of the BRD concept by universities has accelerated a radical transformation within the traditional archive and library systems in universities (Lynch, 2015). The tremendous changes in the size and volume of research data in the research universities in recent years have also led to questioning the adequacy of classic RDMS to address the characteristics of BRD. On the surface, big research data management (BRDM) does not seem very different from conventional RDM, and data management challenges are not unique to BRD; however, BRD brings new issues at each step of the RDM process, which are not designed according to big data requirements (Laskowski, 2021; Pouchard, 2016). These issues, in some respects, are solved for large-scale distributed scientific collaborations, or as named “cyberinfrastructures”; however, universities or moderate-sized labs, where the budget and access to expertise may be limited, are still facing these issues (Lynch, 2015; Randall et al., 2015).
