During the 1980s governments in all industrial countries have tightened their grip on technological development. This book illustrates the technology race between seven industrial countries in the field of information technology, biotechnology and new materials. However, the analysis of a government's role in technological development goes beyond the simple comparison of financial efforts and policy measures. The policies of seven countries are analysed in their specific national context and much attention is paid to the differences in industrial structure, the different social and institutional settings, and national traditions in government intervention. In order to gain insight into the diffusion of new technologies and the shifts in international competitive relations it is necessary to focus on the social base for technological change among the industrial countries. In this context there is fundamental work to do for economists, political scientists, sociologists, policy makers, technical engineers, consultants, managers in strategic planning and human resources, and so on.

The major purpose of this book is to clarify the importance of non-technological factors in innovation to cope with contemporary complex societal issues while critically reconsidering the relations between science, technology, innovation (STI), and society. For a few decades now, innovation—mainly derived from technological advancement—has been considered a driving force of economic and societal development and prosperity. With that in mind, the following questions are dealt with in this book: What are the non-technological sources of innovation? What can the progress of STI bring to humankind? What roles will society be expected to play in the new model of innovation? The authors argue that the majority of so-called technological innovations are actually socio-technical innovations, requiring huge resources for financing activities, adapting regulations, designing adequate policy frames, and shaping new uses and new users while having the appropriate interaction with society. This book gathers multi- and trans-disciplinary approaches in innovation that go beyond technology and take into account the inter-relations with social and human phenomena. Illustrated by carefully chosen examples and based on broad and well-informed analyses, it is highly recommended to readers who seek an in-depth and up-to-date integrated overview of innovation in its non-technological dimensions.

Asian Space Race Rhetoric Or Reality written by Ajey Lele and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-20 with Science categories.

This book explores the character and contours of the Asian Space Powers. At present, Asian states like China, Japan and India are found investing in space technologies with analogous social and scientific and probably with divergent military intents. Other Asian states like Israel, South Korea and Malaysia are also making investments in the space arena. States like Iran and North Korea are faulted for using space launches as a demonstrative tool to achieve strategic objectives. This work examines this entire maze of activities to unearth where these states are making these investments to accomplish their state-specific goal or are they also trying to surpass each other by engaging in competition. Explaining why and how these states are making investments towards achieving their socio-economic and strategic mandate this book infers that the possibility of Asian Space Race exists but is presently fairly diminutive.

This document reports on how key stakeholders in work force preparedness nationwide are responding to pressures of the skills race. Part 1 presents an overview of the skills challenge and the economic and social consequences of failing to meet the challenge. Part 2 examines the impact of the skills shortage on major stakeholders and explains how the build-up of pressure has pushed U.S. employers, workers, educators, trainers, community leaders, and government officials to join forces to strengthen the transition from school to work, pool their resources to improve training quality and reduce training costs, and respond to market demand for greater access to training and greater portability of skills. Part 3 details some of the more creative developments in work force development and distills eight winning principles for success in the field. An agenda for change is proposed that includes the following items: (1) build public awareness; (2) fill information gaps; (3) leverage technology; (4) focus on metrics (measurement of results); (5) tighten accountability; (6) share best practices; and (7) encourage personal initiative. Lists of the task force members, executive committee members, national affiliates, and 11 related publications conclude the document. (Contains fifteen figures and 55 section endnotes.) (MN)

Philosophy Of Artificial Intelligence written by Markus Pantsar and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-12-02 with Science categories.

This book discusses, from various angles, the new trends in Artificial intelligence (AI), given the current so-called golden period that this field is undergoing. Recent progress in machine learning applications, such as image recognition and natural language processing, have raised the level of optimism that one day an AI can exhibit genuine intelligence. In games like Go and chess, human players have been surpassed by computers. As during earlier periods of AI optimism, there is increasing talk about domain-general artificial intelligence being possible. But just how intelligent are current AI systems, and what can we expect in the future? What will a world with an increasingly important role for AI systems be like? Which shifts with regard to the concept of intelligence as well as the societal order do these developments have? Authors with different views on the present and future of AI research and the role of AI in society discuss these questions, illustrating the diversity of discussions on AI and the many ways our lives are influenced by it.
