Beyond Labels: Understanding Refugee Students with Disabilities in Educational Contexts is an essential text that provides educators with insight into the educational needs of refugee students with disabilities through six meticulously researched case studies and illuminates the complex relationship between displacement trauma and disability, from physical disabilities and dyslexia to autism and visual impairment. Beyond Labels offers evidence-based frameworks for differentiating between language acquisition challenges and learning disabilities, implementing culturally responsive assessments, and developing accommodations that respect both refugee experiences and disability-related needs. Each case study provides guidance on special education processes, family school partnerships, and classroom implementation strategies. Educational professionals will find analysis of critical questions regarding cultural perspectives on disability, effective accommodation strategies, and ensuring educational continuity for students experiencing both displacement and disability. The text includes practical tools such as reflection questions, assessment guidelines, and strength-based intervention approaches. This practical reference for special educators, ESL specialists, school psychologists, and administrators bridges refugee education and disability studies, creating new possibilities for supporting resilient yet vulnerable student populations. Perfect for courses such as: Inclusive Education and Diverse Learners; Special Education Policy and Practice for Refugee Children; Multicultural Education; Educational Psychology for Exceptional Children; Refugee and Immigrant Education; Social Justice in Education; Global Migration and Education; Cross-Cultural Communication in Educational Settings; Trauma-Informed Educational Practices

Children Beyond Labels is an accessible guide to understanding standardised assessment and managing high incidence additional learning needs in the primary school. It offers jargon-free insight into the results of formal assessments which are often used within professional reports and cuts to the core of how primary education professionals and parents can identify, understand and best meet children’s needs. Offering a range of practical and manageable strategies, the book provides clear explanations of commonly used labels which reflect three of the four areas described within the SEND Code of Practice (2015): Cognition and Learning; Communication and Interaction; and Social, Emotional and Mental Health. These categories are illustrated by 18 detailed case studies of children from the author’s own case work, each with their unique profiles of strengths, weaknesses and traits that can sometimes transcend category boundaries. Examples of these traits include: Dyslexia Autism Spectrum Disorder Specific Language Impairment Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Developmental Co-ordination Difficulties Anxiety. This is an invaluable guide to the range of different types of additional learning or special needs of children who are likely to be found in mainstream primary schools. It will be of interest to primary teachers, trainee teachers, teaching assistants, SENCOs, parents and anyone working to support the needs of young children.

Bodies beyond Labels explores moments of joy and joyful expressions of self-identity, intimacy, sexuality, affect, friendship, social relationships, and religiosity in imperial Spanish cultures, a period when embodiments of such joy were shadowed by comparatively more constrictive social conventions. Viewed in this manner, joy frames historic references to gender, sexuality, and present-day concepts of queerness through homoeroticism, non-labelled bodies, gender fluidity, and performativity. This collection reveals diverse glimmers of joy through a variety of genres, including plays, poems, novels, autobiographies, biblical narratives, and civil law texts, among others. The book is divided into five categories: theatrical works that use mythology to enjoy themes of homoeroticism; narrative prose and visual arts that reveal public and private homoerotic expressions; scopophilia within garden and museum spaces that make possible joyous observations of non-labelled and non-corporeal bodies; biblical narratives and epistolary works that signal religious transgressions of gender and friendship; and sexual geographies explored in historic and legal documents. As new generations develop more nuanced senses of gender and sexual identities, Bodies beyond Labels strives to provide new academic optics, as framed by non-labelled bodies, queer theorizations, joy in unexpected places, and the light that has historically (re)emerged from the shadows.
