The United States has a long record of ambivalence toward recent immigrants. Nowhere is this love-hate relationship more evident than in the public school systems of high-immigration states like California, where pro- and anti-immigration advocates have waged a long-running battle over “bilingual” education versus “English immersion” programs. Unfortunately, this fierce political debate does not always acknowledge day-to-day reality in the schools, and the policies that result may ultimately hinder the schools and students they intend to help. Beyond Bilingual Education cuts through the politics, offering a statistical portrait of English language learners in five large California school districts and highlighting the results of more than 120 interviews conducted with teachers, school administrators, and community service providers about the challenges facing recent immigrants and the schools that serve them. This combined approach yields essential intelligence for policymakers, advocates, and administrators seeking to escape the trap of immigration politics. It is a vital perspective, because how our schools receive, treat, and educate these future workers will directly affect our country’s economic and social health and progress.

Publisher's description: In this original book, B. Kumaravadivelu presents a macrostrategic framework designed to help both beginning and experienced teachers develop a systematic, coherent, and personal theory of practice. His book provides the tools a teacher needs in order to self-observe, self-analyze, and self-evaluate his or her own teaching acts. The framework consists of ten macrostrategies based on current theoretical, empirical, and experiential knowledge of second language and foreign language teaching. These strategies enable teachers to evaluate classroom practices and to generate techniques and activities for realizing teaching goals. With checklists, surveys, projects, and reflective tasks to encourage critical thinking, the book is both practical and accessible. Teachers and future teachers, researchers, and teacher educators will find the volume indispensable.

This book aims to help educators improve their understanding of minority students within the American social context. It contains seven chapters, each written by different authors. The introductory chapter, "The Education of Language Minority Students: A Contextual Interaction Model" by C. Cortes, provides an overview of a theory for how the many sociocultural factors influence language minority education. The next chapter, "Ethnic Minority Issues in the United States: Challenges for the Educational System" by S. Sue and A. Padilla, looks at historical explanations for why some groups do better in school than others. "Understanding Sociocultural Factors: Knowledge, Identity, and School Adjustment" by J. Ogbu and M. Matute-Bianchi analyzes sociocultural factors such as group attitudes toward education, self-identity, historical experiences, cultural values, and job ceiling. The next chapter, "Sociocultural Contexts of Language Development" by S. Heath, stresses the inclusion of mother tongue and second language education in language minority educational reform. "Sociocultural Resources in Instruction: A Context-Specific Approach" by S. Diaz, L. Moll and H. Mehan provides a detailed illustration of how language development (reading and writing) can be improved, based on a positive link between the home and school. "Cooperative Learning and Sociocultural Factors in Schooling" by S. Kagan describes cooperative learning as an educational innovation for improving students' acquisition of both academic and humanistic skills. The concluding chapter, "Educators' Responses to Sociocultural Diversity" by M. McGroarty facilitates educators' understanding and use of the hypotheses and approaches proposed in the earlier chapters. The book contains approximately 200 references. (KS)

McGraw-Hill World Languages is pleased to announce our collaboration with the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in the publication of their annual conference report, commencing with the 2001 report. The chapters in Beyond the Boundaries reflect and comment on the new contexts for language learning that continue to emerge in this country. These changes, motivated by factors such as changing societal attitude towards language learning, globalization of U.S. economy, and increased global awareness, include a growing interest in study-abroad opportunities, community-based outreach programs, and life-long learning. Beyond the Boundaries is ideal for use in teacher education and methods courses, or for undergraduate and graduate seminars that deal with issues in language education or language acquisition.
