There is no denying that linguistic contrasts between languages can have an impact on the learning of foreign languages, and there is no doubt that an awareness of the differences between the mother tongue (L1) and the foreign or second language being learnt (L2) can help learners to acquire the L2. The aim of this book is to acquaint Hungarian students of English with some of the linguistic contrasts between English and Hungarian that may affect their own and their future students' learning of English. The author, Pál Heltai, provides a summary of the most important principles and concepts proposed by classical contrastive analysis, highlighting those that have retained their relevance for foreign language teaching over the years and presents an overview of the most important contrasts between English and Hungarian at the level of– phonetics, syntax, lexicology, pragmatics and translation. Most chapters consist of a theoretical introduction complemented by illustrative texts with example sentences and translations. The book provides a good opportunity for students to recapitulate or supplement some of the material covered earlier in their linguistics courses at university and shows the relevance of these disciplines to foreign language learning, teaching and translation. This is the revised version of the previous book, supplemented by suggested solutions to the exercises. This edition is also available online.

Analyzing Discourse written by Robert A. Dooley and has been published by Sil International, Global Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Discourse analysis categories.

Analyzing Discourse is an introduction to discourse analysis for linguistic field workers. It is practical, addressing issues commonly confronted by field linguists. Rather than applying a rigid theory or surveying a variety of approaches, it provides a methodology that has been refined over years of use. The material follows a functional and cognitive approach that seems to be a good approximation of how discourse is actually produced and understood. Since the aim of the manual is introductory rather than comprehensive, most chapters are relatively short, and the whole can be covered in fifteen classroom hours. References are provided for further reading on the topics discussed. The manual can be used individually or in group sessions, such as in a formal course or a linguistic seminar. In a group setting, concepts can be illustrated by examining further texts than those provided in the manual. Robert A. Dooley has a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. He has been involved in translation and the literacy team in the Brazilian Mbyá Guarani language project. He also has served as Brazil SIL Linguistic Consultant and as Director of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session, from 1988 to 1993.
