Highlighting the important innovations embodied in the 1992 National Assessment of Educational Progress' (NAEP) Reading Report Card, this report provides information on how the NAEP's large-scale reading assessment is evolving in response to changing perceptions of reading development and assessment procedures. Included in the report is an overview of the theoretical framework underlying the assessment, a description of and presentation of reading materials used in the assessment, a discussion of students' performance on constructed-response questions, and a presentation of example questions. Major findings discussed in the report include: (1) at grades 4, 8, and 12, students' average performance was highest on multiple choice questions, somewhat lower on short constructed-response questions, and lowest on extended-response questions; (2) the advantage of female students over male students in reading achievement was more evident for the short constructed-response questions than for multiple-choice questions, and the most evident for extended-response questions; and (3) when demonstrating comprehension of texts that they had selected from a compendium of seven short stories, eighth and twelfth graders demonstrated relative success in answering the constructed-response questions. Also included in the report are results of students' performance in reading for different purposes. Finally, two special studies conducted in 1992 are highlighted in the report--a literary selection task and a comparison of oral and written responses to comprehension questions. Contains 31 tables and five figures of data. A procedural appendix is attached. (RS)

Each of these chapters concludes with useful tables listing some of the most commonly used assessments and their psychometric properties.

Linking Reading Assessment to Instruction: An Application Worktext for Elementary Classroom Teachers, Second Edition applies current theory to classroom practice by providing, in each chapter, a brief explanation of major concepts followed by guided practical experience in administering, scoring, and interpreting reading assessment techniques. Changes in this revised second edition include more information about portfolio assessment and a new chapter on running records. Like the popular first edition, this new edition emphasizes the use of assessment and diagnosis for instructional decision making - rather than for simply giving grades; stresses the use of informal assessment techniques - reflecting the current emphasis in educational assessment theories - but also includes coverage of standardized test scores; provides both classroom-tested results and interpretations of the data, giving students step-by-step experience in administering, scoring, and interpreting assessment techniques; and includes numerous "hands-on" activity worksheets., and t ưĐ

Why do we assess reading? What do we assess when we assess reading? How, where, and when do we assess reading? Reading instruction and assessment expert Peter Afflerbach addresses these questions and much more in the 3rd edition of Understanding and Using Reading Assessment, K–12. Using the CURRV model to evaluate reading assessment methods—including reading inventories, teacher questioning, performance assessment, and high-stakes reading tests—Afflerbach considers the consequences and usefulness of each method, the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders, and the reliability and validity of the assessments. In addition, he examines four important but often overlooked aspects of reading assessment: Assessment accommodation for English-language learners and students with special needs Assessment of noncognitive aspects of reading, such as motivation, engagement, self-concept, and self-efficacy The use of formative and summative assessment The importance of self-assessment in building reading independence The book provides detailed case studies from all grade levels to illustrate reading assessment done well. It also includes 15 reproducible forms and checklists that teachers and administrators can use to optimize their reading assessment efforts. Students are expected to read increasingly complex texts and to complete increasingly complex reading-related tasks to demonstrate their growth as readers. This book offers teachers and administrators alike a clear path to helping students meet those expectations. This book is a co-publication of ASCD and ILA. New to the 3rd edition: New chapter “Formative and Summative Assessment” Three significantly revised chapters—Performance Assessment; Assessment Accommodation for English Learners and Students With Special Needs (“Accommodation and Reading Assessment” in 2nd edition); Assessing “the Other”: Important Noncognitive Aspects of Reading Fifteen reproducible and downloadable forms and checklists
