The difference between French and German definitions of citizenship is instructive--and, for immigrants from North Africa, Turkey, and Eastern Europe, decisive. Brubaker shows how this difference--between the territorial basis of the French citizenry and German emphasis on blood descent--was shaped by sharply differing understandings of nationhood.

Germany S Colonial Pasts written by Eric Ames and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-01 with History categories.

Germany’s Colonial Pasts is a wide-ranging study of German colonialism and its legacies. Inspired by Susanne Zantop’s landmark book Colonial Fantasies, and extending her analyses there, this volume offers new research by scholars from Europe, Africa, and the United States. It also commemorates Zantop’s distinguished life and career (1945–2001). Some essays in this volume focus on Germany’s formal colonial empire in Africa and the Pacific between 1884 and 1914, while others present material from earlier or later periods such as German emigration before 1884 and colonial discourse in German-ruled Polish lands. Several essays examine Germany’s postcolonial era, a complex period that includes the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany with its renewed colonial obsessions, and the post-1945 era. Particular areas of emphasis include the relationship of anti-Semitism to colonial racism; respectability, sexuality, and cultural hierarchies in the formal empire; Nazi representations of colonialism; and contemporary perceptions of race. The volume’s disciplinary reach extends to musicology, religious studies, film, and tourism studies as well as literary analysis and history. These essays demonstrate why modern Germany must confront its colonial and postcolonial pasts, and how those pasts continue to shape the German cultural imagination.

Between the years 1919 and 1933 the German government tried to control the flow of Germany's citizens emigrating abroad. During this time period of German history there existed a vast array of unofficial organisations, some with semi-official status, others being purely private, that were vying for power and influence. Each organisation had its own opinion on emigration and how to culturally support ethnic Germans living outside of Germany's borders. This study analyses the role of two private German cultural institutions, the Verein für das Deutschtum im Ausland and the Deutsches Ausland-Institut, their influences on German emigration to Canada and assessment of ethnic Germans already residing there.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject History of Germany - National Socialism, World War II, , course: National Socialist German Women ́s League Abroad, language: English, abstract: Beiträge zu Feminismus, Antisemitismus und Nationalsozialismus im 19./20. Jahrhundert: Vol. 9. National Socialist groups of the German Women's League Abroad existed in many European and non-European countries, such as Guatemala, Chile, Brazil, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Japan, the British Mandate of Palestine and many more. Founded in August 1933, the new overseas organization was a counterpart to the NS Women's League in Germany with the declared goal to unite all Nazi women abroad who were ready to knit, bake and mother for the German ethnic community. In 1941, the new league consisted of more than 300 local group leaders and nearly 3,000 assistants and had organized more than 35,000 meetings and gatherings. Researchers and readers who are interested in the worldwide propagation of German National Socialism can easily find various articles about the body's activity abroad. However, what is still lacking is an introductory, general summary of the organization. To fill this academic void, the book offers an overview of the founding and development of the association as well as details of its program and conceptualization. The second part of the study seeks to clearly and colorfully depict the establishment, activities and events of the German Women's League Abroad in the British Mandate of Palestine, based on documents and photos from archives in Germany and Israel.
