Given its characteristics and the complexity of its use and its environment, the helicopter is exposed to damage and a whole series of measures can be previewed to alientate this risk. The presentations concentrated on five main topics: 1. Crew training; 2. The different conditions of use; 3. The psycho-physiological component; 4. Survival equipment and methods; and 5. Accidents and their prevention. A careful reading of the papers presented at the symposium will enable both specialists and decision-makers to make a summary assessment of the constraints of the missions on the one hand, and on the other, of the new methods of protection and training and the new technologies which will enable aircrew to carry out their missions in a safer environment. In addition, they will perhaps discover that helicopter operation can be optimised by a series of different devices and above all by judicious matching of "type of helicopter-type of aircrew training-type of additional on-board equipment".

People serving in the military will, at some point, be exposed to high-intensity noise of various types. Some may develop hearing loss, especially for high-frequency sounds, or tinnitus ("ringing in the ears"), or both, as a result of their noise exposure. Hearing loss or tinnitus incurred or aggravated during military service may qualify veterans for services and financial compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Since World War II, the human and financial cost associated with hearing loss among military veterans have repeatedly drawn attention to noise, hearing loss, and the need for hearing conservation in military settings.

In the context of human-machine interactions, the interface is the point of contact between the human and the system and is, in this sense, of primary importance to the user. Computers and other advanced technologies have developed over the last two decades, and the nature and quality of the interface are critical to facilitate successful transactions. This book considers developments in advanced technologies at the user interface. It also concerns the evaluation of interface designs, and considers techniques that are used to assess performance and quality of the human-machine interactions.
