Abstract: Many communities in Egypt, specifically the rural areas, are unquestionably distressed places as a result of the major economic and political shifts that have occurred over the past few years. Strategies of community development are currently viewed as the radical remedy for poverty related problems. In Egypt, community development strategies are usually driven from traditional approaches including charity, needs and rights based approaches which focus on basic needs like shelters and food. These approaches have proved a deficiency as they ignore the structural causes of poverty and address symptoms only. In response to these shortages came an alternative capacity focused practice called Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The case in this research is that ABCD could offer a coherent strategy of sustainable development in poor communities in Egypt. Based on that, the main objectives of the research is to study the application of ABCD approach in rural areas, and in turn present a customized ABCD approach derived from the international guidelines and the Egyptian experience. In order to fulfill these objectives, case studies from the rural communities in Egypt that adopts ABCD approach were extensively studied mostly through qualitative research methods. The analysis and the findings of the current research are most relevant to developing countries and to those emerging from state capitalism and centralization. The results of the research give substantial contribution in understanding and identifying the ABCD approach. Thus, a possible way is paved to generalize this bottom up development strategy over poor communities.

"Community" has long been a critical concept for social scientists, and never more so amid the growing economic inequity, natural and human disasters, and warfare of the opening years of the twenty-first century. In this volume, leading scholar-activists develop a conceptual framework for both the theory and practice of building communities. Rethinking the very concept in light of technological change and globalization, they examine local responses to worldwide trends, study the ways that communities generate and use resources, and evaluate existing theories and approaches to community building to determine the best strategies for fostering community strength and vitality. Their work with groups ranging from refugees, religious charities, and poor urban neighborhoods to tribal peoples, international corporations, and public health agencies demonstrates that local communities contain the seeds for a more desirable future and suggests how we may encourage those seeds to grow.

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), Looking Back to Look Forward is a prelude to a longer book. It is framed as a conversation between Cormac Russell, who is a leader in the Asset Based Movement in Europe, and Director of ABCD Europe and Professor John McKnight the Co-Director of the ABCD Institute. This book provides a detailed background to Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), with a particular emphasis on the contributions of the people, such as Illich, Alinsky, Mendelsohn, Miller, Snow, Block and others, who have been most influential in shaping the conceptual framework and practice of this approach. It also provides a deep insight into Professor John McKnight's (one of the originators, and the most central figure in ABCD alongside Professor Jody Kretzmann) thinking on society and community. It offers a wealth of commentary on the challenges facing society and community, what needs to change, and how we might go about it.This publication is therefore a must read for anybody interested in social policy and community development. It will be of particular interest to those seeking to gain a deep, well informed and rounded understanding of Asset Based Community Development from its beginning to the current day.
