As software systems become increasingly ubiquitous, issues of dependability become ever more crucial. Given that solutions to these issues must be considered from the very beginning of the design process, it is clear that dependability and security have to be addressed at the architectural level. This book, as well as its six predecessors, was born of an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures, dependability, and security. This state-of-the-art survey contains expanded, peer-reviewed papers based on selected contributions from the Workshop on Architecting Dependable Systems (WADS 2009), held at the International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN 2009), as well as a number of invited papers written by renowned experts in the area. The 13 papers are organized in topical sections on: mobile and ubiquitous systems, architecting systems, fault management, and experience and vision.

As software systems become ubiquitous, the issues of dependability become more and more critical. Given that solutions to these issues must be taken into account from the very beginning of the design process, it is appropriate that dependability is addressed at the architectural level. This book results from an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures and dependability. Inspired by the ICSE 2003 Workshop on Software Architectures for Dependable Systems, the book focuses on topics relevant to improving the state of the art in architecting dependable systems. The 15 thoroughly reviewed papers originate partly from the workshop; others were solicited in order to achieve complete coverage of all relevant aspects. The papers are organized into topical sections on architectures for dependability, fault-tolerance in software architectures, dependability analysis in software architectures, and industrial experience.

Annotation Proceedings of the February 1997 workshop, WORDS'97, include one panel discussion--selecting quality of service in a heterogeneous environment: bandwidth, security, fault tolerance and real-time behavior. The rest of the 45 papers are organized in sessions on models/language, operating systems/architecture, system engineering, system validation and verification, applications, dependability and fault tolerance, and communication. Two early bird sessions covered a variety of topics, including object-based checkpoints in distributed systems and time-bounded cooperative recovery with the distributed real-time application. Computer control systems are increasingly required to be highly dependable and to have deterministic timing properties. Distributed architectures have the potential to meet this challenge. The advantages of distributed computer control systems include the possibility of composing large systems out of pre-tested components with small integration effort, their well-defined fault containment properties and their capacity to make effective use of mass-produced silicon chips. The IFAC Workshop series on Distributed Computer Control Systems (DCCS) highlights and traces the growth of key concepts in this field at their various stages of development. Theoretical and practice-oriented viewpoints receive equal emphasis and there is a creative blending of the disciplines of computer science and control engineering. The 1998 DCCS Workshop was notable for the attention given to true real-time communication networks and protocols. The complexity of the trade-off between services, dependability mechanisms and system-level properties was highlighted, and rigorous modelling and analysis methodologies were discussed. Event-triggered and time-triggered protocols were contrasted. Models for analysing and predicting response times in distributed systems and for predicting the effect of response-time jitter on the performance of feedback control loops were presented. The application of formal methods to the specification and development of safety-critical control software also received much attention. Distributed object methodologies and object request brokers were also highlighted as being promising approaches for the programming of large-scale, heterogeneous distributed systems. Applications reported included control systems for traffic lights, jet engines, automobiles, fully-automatic trains and flexible manufacturing systems.
