The term 'transnationalism' has gained considerable academic and popular currency despite a lack of clear definitions, in part because its overall form changes as its influence incorporates additional spheres of daily life on a variety of scales and contexts. The purpose of this volume is to bring together different perspectives on this phenomenon, using case studies that represent some of the most current thinking on 'transnationalism' in a wide range of disciplines. Central themes which this book explores include legal and economic reactions to transnational migration; the (re)negotiation of identities in the context of changing national, social and cultural identities; and the emergence of new imaginings of home and social space in transnational communities. Approaching Transnationalisms: Studies on Transnational Societies, Multicultural Contacts and Imaginings of Home foregrounds powerful transnational forces crossing the boundaries of nation-states, and at the same time, gives attention to the continued significance of the nation-state and the diversity of localized reactions to transnational challenges.

Reading Chinese Transnationalisms responds to the growing interest in transnational cultural studies by examining Chinese transnationalism from a variety of perspectives. In interrogating social practices and literary and filmic texts which frequently cross national borders in imagining Chineseness, the contributors to this volume also challenge received notions of Chinese transnationalism, opening up new perspectives on the topic. The structure of the book is clearly subdivided into sections on society, literature, and films for quick reference, and each essay is written in accessible language without sacrificing intellectual rigor and critical relevance. The international list of contributors and the wide-ranging subjects they address make Reading Chinese Transnationalisms a unique work in its field. This volume will appeal to all with an interest in Chinese transnationalism, and in particular those who come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds in the humanities and social science.

Working And Mothering In Asia written by Theresa W. Devasahayam and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Family & Relationships categories.
Many women in Asia engage in full-time work and continue to shoulder home and familial responsibilities in accordance to social and cultural norms. As larger structural, economic, historical and social forces impinge upon the way women negotiate roles as mother and worker in everyday life, the definition of "motherhood" in Asia, as in other parts of the world, is highly nuanced and variegated. The model of the male as breadwinner, a feature of middle and upper class households, has undergone tremendous change in recent time. Increasingly, women (particularly those who are better-educated) have entered the job market owing to rising costs of living and a desire to work. This book examines how Asian women negotiate, contest and reconfigure motherhood in a region characterised by different cultures, societies, ethnic, religious and class groupings. This book reveals recurrent themes on patriarchy, labour and relationship, strategies of accommodation, conflict and emotion management, the role of fathers, socio-cultural definitions of "good mothering", and the political meanings of "maternity" and "family", and last but not least, it provides an important counterpoint to studies based on white middle-class North Americans, which is the focus of much of the earlier research on this subject.
