Preface to Second Edition From the time that the original edition was published in 1985, multidimensional systems theory has matured into a discipline of research and teaching with an expanding array of applications. The international journal on Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing, founded in 1990, is now in its fourteenth year. A biannual international workshop on n-D systems was launched in 1998 and the impressive number of special sessions, mini-symposia, monographs and special issues that have emerged bear testimony to the growing popularity and importance of the subject -matter among scientists in various disciplines including engineering, computer science, geophysics and mathematics. This second edition builds on the fundamentals expounded in the original book with the addition of important developments in theory as well as practice since 1985. Particular attention has been given to the consolidation of basic results, uni fication of theory and the diversification of applications. Chapters that remain have been reordered and updated in content and references. Some chapters, considered to be somewhat outdated, have been replaced with newer proven as well as poten tially significant results, inspired by some groundbreaking research and directions which are likely to stimulate further research. In addition to the description of some challenging open problems, posed in 1985, which have since been solved, new problems yet to be tackled are also included.

“Serre’s Conjecture”, for the most part of the second half of the 20th century, - ferred to the famous statement made by J. -P. Serre in 1955, to the effect that one did not know if ?nitely generated projective modules were free over a polynomial ring k[x ,. . . ,x], where k is a ?eld. This statement was motivated by the fact that 1 n the af?ne scheme de?ned by k[x ,. . . ,x] is the algebro-geometric analogue of 1 n the af?ne n-space over k. In topology, the n-space is contractible, so there are only trivial bundles over it. Would the analogue of the latter also hold for the n-space in algebraic geometry? Since algebraic vector bundles over Speck[x ,. . . ,x] corre- 1 n spond to ?nitely generated projective modules over k[x ,. . . ,x], the question was 1 n tantamount to whether such projective modules were free, for any base ?eld k. ItwasquiteclearthatSerreintendedhisstatementasanopenproblemintheshe- theoretic framework of algebraic geometry, which was just beginning to emerge in the mid-1950s. Nowhere in his published writings had Serre speculated, one way or another, upon the possible outcome of his problem. However, almost from the start, a surmised positive answer to Serre’s problem became known to the world as “Serre’s Conjecture”. Somewhat later, interest in this “Conjecture” was further heightened by the advent of two new (and closely related) subjects in mathematics: homological algebra, and algebraic K-theory.

This book is written as an introduction to polynomial matrix computa tions. It is a companion volume to an earlier book on Methods and Applications of Error-Free Computation by R. T. Gregory and myself, published by Springer-Verlag, New York, 1984. This book is intended for seniors and graduate students in computer and system sciences, and mathematics, and for researchers in the fields of computer science, numerical analysis, systems theory, and computer algebra. Chapter I introduces the basic concepts of abstract algebra, including power series and polynomials. This chapter is essentially meant for bridging the gap between the abstract algebra and polynomial matrix computations. Chapter II is concerned with the evaluation and interpolation of polynomials. The use of these techniques for exact inversion of poly nomial matrices is explained in the light of currently available error-free computation methods. In Chapter III, the principles and practice of Fourier evaluation and interpolation are described.
