Essay from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Department of English and American Studies), course: American TV Serials: The Wire, Mad Men, Homeland, language: English, abstract: In the following research paper I will focus on the American TV serial “Mad Men” (AMC, 2007-now). In the course of our class we discussed several aspects of the award-winning show and I was most fascinated by the sexual politics and the dynamics of the female-male relationships of the characters. Therefore, the focus of my work will be on the gender relations within “Mad Men” and more precisely on the character of Betty Draper. It is my aim to analyze the character of Betty within the patriarchal structures she finds herself in (chapter 3) and this analysis will be the main part of this paper. Prior to Betty’s analysis, chapter 2 serves to clarify the concepts of Second-Wave Feminism and Patriarchy since they provide the historical background and theoretical framework. The last part of the paper will be the conclusion, followed by a list of the cited works. I hope that this term paper contributes to answering the question of how the character of Betty Draper is influenced by the patriarchal structures and gender roles of the 1960s. Finally, it is to be said that I will exclusively focus on Season 1 of “Mad Men” and that given the 6-7 page maximum a more in-depth analysis would be possible.

In the last decade, there has been an enormous amount of scholarship on women′s issues, feminism, and gender as variables in various institutions and processes of society. This interest in gender, particularly in the role of women, has been evident in all the social sciences. The volume of books, articles, series, and journals dealing with women continues to increase rapidly. Yet until now, there has been no key to this large body of literature. More than just another collection of articles on women′s studies, Analyzing Gender is the major synthesis of current social science research on issues involving gender. This volume is a tightly edited collection of articles that consolidates our current state of knowledge about the role of women in society. Contributors come from a wide variety of social science disciplines and theoretical perspectives, but universally seek to enlighten us on what this flurry of activity has demonstrated about the issues that face women in contemporary society. Chapters are broad in scope--and carefully examine the current state of knowledge and research. Analyzing Gender is destined to become the benchmark for current and future research on sex roles and gender studies. "This important new collection promises to be a landmark in the evolution of feminist scholarship. The contributions and the editors′ comprehensive introduction move beyond examining bias in the social sciences to examining new descriptions, concepts, and theories that emerge from research on women. As a result, the book will help us think about how feminist studies are transforming social scientific thought." --Margaret L. Anderson, University of Delaware "Remarkable reading." --Midwest Book Review "An exciting and consistent collection of essays using the social construction of gender perspective. This book will advance feminist social science theory and have an honored place in feminist libraries and on feminist course lists. I look forward to using it." --Judith Lorber, CUNY Graduate Center "This volume introduces new terrain and provides a benchmark for feminist sociology." --Contemporary Sociology "Likely to become a definitive reference for any feminist social scientist. . . . Analyzing Gender is provocative, politically self-conscious, thorough, and a work of impeccable integrity. . . . In emphasizing the centrality of the intersection of contemporary systems of hierarchy, the complexities of the diverse realms of social life, and the importance of subjectivity and experienced life, Analyzing Gender distinguishes itself from other surveys of feminist thinking." --Contemporary Psychology "Presents state-of-the-art research and thought on issues related to gender. . . . Hess and Ferree have provided an informative and insightful introductory essay. . . . An essential resource for scholars as well as students, the collection is uniformly written and referenced. Each essay includes a substantial, up-to-date bibliography and there is a well-organized index for the volume as a whole. Highly recommended." --Choice "An essential addition to the bookshelf of anyone teaching the area." --Book Ends "Most will find [Analyzing Gender] a valuable book to own, to consult and employ in feminist teaching and research. . . . Its chapters provide comprehensive coverage of such staple arenas of gender analysis as family, work, sexuality, popular culture, and political life, amplified by essays on feminist challenges to religion, medicine, law, knowledge, and militarism. Most are highly informative, offering useful ′crash courses′ in their respective subfields. . . . Among Analyzing Gender′s many strengths is its keen sensitivity to class, race, and other power-laden differences between women." --SIGNS: Journal of Women in Culture and Society "An excellent collection of contributions. . . . There are many scholarly and innovative chapters here which educators are strongly recommended to read. . . . This is an outstanding collection overall and a valuable consolidation of the current stae-of-the-art in gender research." --Evaluation and Research in Education

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Freiburg, course: Language Variation and Change, language: English, abstract: Gender roles have always been an important issue in analyzing human behavior. In order to understand the interaction between men and women, it is useful to have a closer look at conversations between male and female speakers and to analyze how they communicate with each other. Some questions that of course occur are whether female speakers talk more than male speakers or if male speakers use more vernacular language, just to name a few examples. Obviously, there is a lot of stereotypical thinking in analyzing gender behavior and many people expect to find some clichés certified. The analysis in this term paper concerns the differences in interrupting by male or female speakers in a conversation. Former conversation analyses tried to demonstrate that in most cases men interrupt women more often than the other way round and that one main reason for this fact is that men always unconsciously try to dominate women and present power. Deborah Tannen examines this claim in her book “You just don’t understand: women and men in conversation” (Tannen 1990). While examining the behavior of male and female speakers in conversation she clearly points out that it is not enough to count interruptions in a conversation and to interpret those as an unconscious gender-typical habit, but that it is necessary to pay attention to the factors that caused an interruption and to look beyond the surface in order to understand the events and the development of a conversation. She emphasizes thatn [...] interruption is inescapably a matter of interpretation regarding individuals’ rights and obligations. To determine whether a speaker is violating another speaker’s rights, you have to know a lot about both speakers and the situation. (Tannen 1990: 190)

A Framework For Analysis Of Gender And Other Socioeconomic Variables In Ag Nrm written by Constance Marie McCorkle and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Agricultural resources categories.
Practical, problem-solving analysis of gender and other socioeconomic variables for use in Ag & NRM (agriculture and natural resource management) development has been hobbled by biological and sociological reductionisms and by analytic disjunctions between human and biophysical ecologies. As an alternative, this article introduces a framework for the problem-centered analysis of biosocially defined groups and their roles in Ag & NRM within producer communities or socionatural regions. The framework goes beyond simple gendered divisions of labor to also examine intra-household, household, and inter- and supra-household groups and their access to the natural resources upon which cropping and stockraising depend; control of the necessary techno-ecological knowledge in the five major domains of Ag & NRM activity (resource management, production/extraction, transformation, distribution, and consumption/nutrition); responsibilities for supervising or administering Ag & NRM tasks in these domains; and decision-making power in all these realms. Examples from Africa and an extended case from stockraising in the Andes illustrate the utility of such a framework for the successful design, implementation, and evaluation of equitable and environmentally sound and sustainable Ag & NRM development initiatives. The framework's utility for training in gender analysis is also noted.

Seminar paper from the year 2025 in the subject Gender Studies, grade: 5,5 (1.0–6.0, 6.0 being best), University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, language: English, abstract: Kosovo’s labour market demonstrates significant gender disparities, with female labour force participation remaining at just 20%, the lowest in the Western Balkans. Despite legislative frameworks promoting gender equality and labor rights, women face persistent barriers rooted in patriarchal norms, structural inequalities and socio-economic challenges. This paper explores how gender equality and labour rights shape female labour market participation in postwar Kosovo, focusing on the key challenges women face. The findings highlight that cultural expectations, inadequate infrastructure and discriminatory practices are among the primary obstacles preventing women from fully engaging in the workforce. While some progress has been made, such as initiatives supporting females in the workforce, the gap between legal frameworks and practical outcomes remains wide. Recommendations include strengthening enforcement mechanisms, addressing socio-cultural barriers, and investing in supportive infrastructure to foster an inclusive labor market.

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, grade: 1, University of Dalarna, language: English, abstract: Sergio Leone, the well known Italian Western director, once criticized the woman's role in the Hollywood Western as follows: [T]he woman is imposed on the action, as a star, and is generally destined to be 'had' by the male lead. But she does not exist as a woman. [...] Usually, the woman not only holds up the story, but she has no real character, no reality. She is a symbol. She is there without any reason to be there, simply because one must have a woman [...]. (Leone quoted in Frayling 2006: 129) This critique of women in the American Western seems to imply that the Italian Leone himself tried to depict women differently in his Western movies: either to let them completely out or to provide them with a real character, with a reason to be in the film. Is his way of depicting women then prototypical for the other Italian Westerns? Is there maybe even a specific Italian way of representing gender roles in Western movies which is different from that of their American counterparts? In general, Western movies have been harshly criticized for their depiction of women. Many authors have argued that the Western in general is a genre that focuses mainly on men and masculinity and leaves only small space with narrow stereotypes for women (see for example Mitchell 1996, Tompkins 1992, French 1997). The research questions are: 1) Is there a difference in the gender depiction in Spaghetti Westerns and Hollywood Westerns? 2) If there is a difference, what are the reasons for this? To answer these questions, different theories of gender in movies are addressed, in order to give an overview of the approaches towards such a topic. Afterwards, the Hollywood and Spaghetti Western in general, as well as the gender depictions in them will be theorized. As a first approach to explain the expected differences, the focus will be on the (visua

Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Psychology - Social Psychology, Addis Ababa University (School of Psychology), course: Social program development and Evaluation, language: English, abstract: Scholars began to study gender and organizations to understand better the dimensions of and reasons for continuing inequality between women and men in the workplace and the economy. Most research on gender structures has been done in public and private employing organizations, but researchers have also examined voluntary organizations such as religious groups, charitable organizations, and sports associations.
