"This paper develops sophisticated data management facilities for maintaining computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) databases. The product of this research is the theoretical design of an object-oriented data model (ODM), and the implementation of an ODM computer software prototype. The work focuses on mechanical design, engineering, and manufacturing, specifically product definition data generated during initial design phases. Detailed analysis of CAD/CAM application and data management requirements were conducted to produce the ODM functional specifications. This paper presents the results of this analysis and an evaluation of ODM in achieving the goals of integrated CAD/CAM data management systems. Although most discussion concentrates on mechanical manufacturing, the developed methodology and tools for CAD/CAM data management apply to other design domains such as architecture and electronics."--Rand abstracts

This volume presents the proceedings of an international workshop on the processing of declarative knowledge. The workshop was organized and hosted by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in cooperation with the Association for Logic Programming (ALP) and the Gesellschaft f}r Informatik (GI). Knowledge is often represented using definite clauses, rules, constraints, functions, conceptual graphs, and related formalisms. The workshop addressed such high-level representations and their efficient implementation required for declarative knowledge bases. Many of the papers treat representation methods, mainly concept languages, and many treat implementation methods, such as transformation techniques and WAM-like abstract machines. Several papers describe implemented knowledge-processing systems. The competition between procedural and declarative paradigms was discussed in a panel session, and position statements of the panelists are included in the volume.

During the design evolution process, many changes will be performed to different sets of objects. This volume is the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Deductive and Object-Oriented Databases (DOOD). During the last decade, deductive and object-oriented systems have received a great deal of attention, but for the most part these two fields were evolving independently of each other. Today there is a large body of work suggesting that the deductive and object-oriented paradigms complement each other. The object-oriented paradigm is characterized by its view of the data, whereby information is grouped around objects with complex internal structure accessed via methods. The declarative paradigm is centered around the idea that data manipulation must be done through a declarative, logic-based language. It is hoped that these two aspects, brought together in one system, will provide an integrated framework fora new database technology. The DOOD conference brings together researchers and developers in the fields of deductive and object-oriented databases to stimulate technical discussion and accelerate the integration of the two technologies. This volume contains 28 contributed papers (selected from 98 submissions) and two invited papers by world-renowned researchers.
