Designed as a practical reference guide for professional pianists and piano teachers, A Guide to Piano Music by Women Composers, Volume I, is an annotated catalogue of the available piano music in print composed by 144 women born before the 20th century. The work also features biographies and extensive bibliographical information for each composer. Arranged alphabetically by composer into categories including single works, collections, and anthologies, the music is also described in terms of grade level, genre, mood, style characteristics, and technical requirements, and ranges in difficulty from late elementary to virtuoso concert repertoire. Far too many teachers, students, professional musicians, and audiences are unaware of the contributions made by women in music, and of the beauty and merit of their specific compositions. This reference work provides an invaluable addition to the current literature.

Before one can seriously study, analyze, or theorize about a subject, one needs to understand its foundation and be comfortable with its basic premises. Music in North America and the West Indies from the Discovery to 1850, in conjunction with the author's first Scarecrow Press book, Music in Ibero-America to 1850, intends to lay the groundwork for the musical and cultural history of North America. Music in North America is a survey of the people, events, and institutions that helped shape music in the early centuries of North America. Collecting information from various historical data, author Daniel Mendoza de Arce presents straightforward descriptions of both religious and secular early music. Basic historical information about the Renaissance and Baroque periods in North America and the Caribbean are presented chronologically through 1850 along musical, geographic, and cultural lines. A valuable study for researchers, students, and interested readers alike, this treatise helps readers achieve a sense of perspective and a broader understanding of their place in world culture.

Burleigh (both African Americans), Horatio Parker, and Maurice Arnold - to forge a uniquely American tradition; they, in turn, became mentors and teachers to a new generation of composers, including Charles Ives, George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and Duke Ellington. Dvorak heard for himself the "dialects and idioms ... commingled in this great country" and expressed them in his own way in a dozen masterpieces written during his visit. His "New World" Symphony, for example - still the most famous ever written on American soil - was composed in New York amid what he called the "American push" of the streets. And two of his most celebrated chamber works, the F Major Quartet and the E-flat Major Quintet, were written during his travels through the prairies of northeast Iowa, which he described as the "American Sahara." The contributors to this anthology are among the world's most distinguished authorities on Dvorak.
