Wireless edge networks aim to provide last-mile wireless connections between access points and diversified wireless end devices. Recent years witness the rapid development of wireless communication ecosystems including fundamental theory breakthroughs, manufacture capability improvements, as well as the explosively increasing wireless end devices and service demands. It is known that spectrum is the irreplaceable resource for wireless transmissions in edge networks. Nevertheless, it is quite challenging and inefficient to allocate dedicated spectrum for each single transmission link due to the severe shortage of spectrum resource. Alternatively, by enabling different links to use the same spectrum, spectrum sharing is envisioned to be a promising paradigm to properly accommodate the conflict between the scarce spectrum resource and substantial spectrum demands. Conventionally, model-driven optimization methods are widely adopted to optimize the spectrum sharing policy in the edge network and achieve friendly coexistence among different transmission links. However, future wireless edge network is predicted to be large-scale and heterogeneous, model-driven optimization methods will be problematic such as imperfect modelling and unacceptable overheads. Different from the existing related books on spectrum sharing or spectrum management for wireless edge networks, our book leverages the artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve smart spectrum sharing for wireless edge networks and elaborates AI-enabled spectrum sharing technique in typical scenarios, which can guide the development of next-generation spectrum sharing standards, as well as provide innovative spectrum sharing methods for related practitioners, including research fellow, lecturers, and students.

Wireless Coexistence Explore a comprehensive review of the motivation for wireless coexistence and the standards and technology used to achieve it Wireless Coexistence: Standards, Challenges, and Intelligent Solutions delivers a thorough exploration of wireless ecosystems sharing the spectrum, including the multiple standards and key requirements driving the current state of wireless technology. The book surveys several standards, including IEEE 802.22, 802.15.2, and 802.19.1 and expands upon recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence to demonstrate how these technologies might be used to meet or exceed the challenges of wireless coexistence. The text discusses cognitive radio in the context of spectrum coexistence and provides a comparison and assessment of using artificial intelligence in place of, or in addition to, current techniques. It also considers applications to communication theory, learning algorithms for passive wireless coexistence strategies, spectrum situational awareness, and active wireless coexistence strategies. With the necessity of spectrum sharing and the scarcity of unused spectrum on the rise, the standardization of wireless coexistence becomes more important with each passing day. Readers will learn about the challenges posed by shrinking wireless real estate and from the inclusion of topics like: A thorough introduction to the concept of, and motivation for, wireless coexistence, including congestion and interference, policies, and regulations An exploration of different wireless coexistence standards, including the need for standardization and various protocols, including 802.22, 802.15.2, 802.19.1, P1900, and 3GPP Release 13/14 LAA A discussion of the applications of communication theory, including primary user strategies, primary multi-user protocols, and successive interference cancellation A treatment of concepts in learning algorithms Perfect for scientists, researchers, engineers, developers, educators, and administrators working in the area of wireless networks, Wireless Coexistence: Standards, Challenges, and Intelligent Solutions will also earn a place in the libraries of graduate students studying wireless networks and seeking a one-stop reference for subjects related to wireless coexistence standards.

Readers will also gain an understanding of cellular networks, particularly radio access networks, software virtualization, and software-defined networking concepts, and the knowledge needed to design, build, and test a 5G O-RAN system. Some of the sample topics explored in Fundamentals of O-RAN include: RAN evolution from black box 4G RAN to software-based and virtualized RAN (vRAN) Components of the O-RAN architecture including SMO, Non-RT RIC, Near-RT RIC, O-CU-CP, O-CU-UP, O-DU, O-RU, and O-Cloud xApp design and prototyping from scratch using open cellular software, srsRAN and O-RAN Software Community (OSC) software. Examination of various security dimensions inherent in the O-RAN architecture. Testing and integration, covering Open Test and Integration Centers (OTICs), global PlugFests, certification and badging, and end-to-end test specifications Work Groups (WGs), including WG1 to WG11, and focus groups, with information on how to obtain WG specifications Fundamentals of O-RAN is an essential reference for the workforce of tomorrow’s cellular industry, including graduate students, teachers, researchers, faculty members, engineers, and employees involved in the field of wireless networks, especially radio networks.
