The four groups of students in the Agritopia 2022 studio (Architecture & Urbanism Design Studio ARCH 201), taught by Prof. René Davids in Fall 2022 at UC Berkeley’s Environmental Design’s Department of Architecture, took on a twelve-block area between Broadway, Webster, Embarcadero and Fourth Street in Oakland, CA to design combined housing-and-farming models spread out over the neighborhood's existing fabric. They sought to address and correct the historically quite recent split between cities and agriculture by considering various environmental and architectural factors including sustainable food production (farming), water supply and drainage, heat island mitigation, root depth, housing density, and preserving the benefits of the existing urban character.
