A guide for faculty advisers is presented that addresses aspects of the advising process that are often not discussed. Objectives are to accomplish the following: to provide a working definition and theoretical framework for advising, to show with model conversations the theory in practice, to provide procedures for advisor self-evaluation, and to create a vehicle for discussion of those issues germane to advising. To control sources of confusion in the advising process, attention is directed to assumptions about youth and the advisee and incorporation of the roles of advisor and adult role model. Examples of advisor comments to a student are provided to illustrate the different roles the advisor may assume. Additional topics include: the faculty advising contract, the use of a visual model for planning, ineffective communication and risk-taking, students' verbal competence, unequal relationships, the advisee's right to fail, and informational advising. A model to help the advisors negotiate with their managers concerning an advising contract provides an example of the advisor-manager conversation. A second model, providing a focused conversation between advisor and advisee, illustrates a first meeting. The guide includes comments on major points enclosed in "boxes" and a bibliography. (SW)

The second edition of Academic Advising Administration: Essential Knowledge and Skills for the 21st Century examines the evolving boundary-crossing role of the advising administrator in an increasingly complex and diversified higher education environment. Written by scholar-practitioners in the field, chapters situate advising administration as a central and critical function that connects the curriculum and scholarship work of faculty members with the aspirations and goals of students. Through scholarly and practical content, combined with reflective questions, chapters challenge readers to examine the work of advising administration through the lenses of social justice, globalization, and the nature of the academy itself. The portrait of the advising administrator being developed in this second edition is that of a skilled practitioner; visionary and transformative leader; intellectual partner and collaborator; and academic advising "scholar-in-chief." Intended equally for aspiring, new, and seasoned advising administrators, this book presents theories, scholarship, and practical applications that offer opportunities for personal and professional growth, self-reflection, and inspiration.

Little research has been done on faculty attitudes on their advising experience. The current study examined the attitudes of instructional faculty towards their role, responsibility, and competence levels regarding faculty advising in a small, urban university in the southeast United States. The purpose of this research was to investigate and contribute to current research by attempting to better understand faculty attitudes towards their role in developmental student advising. The problem addressed in this study is although effective academic advising is closely linked to students' positive college experience and retention, students continue to report dissatisfaction with the advising they receive as part of their college experience. The theoretical framework for this study lies in Fishbein's Attitude Development Theory as it differentiates among beliefs, attitude, intentions, and behaviors. A quantitative, non experimental, survey research design was used and a mixture of descriptive analyses, repeated measures analyses of variances (ANOVAs), and post-hoc analyses were implemented. This study's data supports the notion that faculty believe that academic advising is an essential part of a student's college experience and that faculty believe they should be responsible and are competent in providing most, if not all, of these advising functions. A greater understanding of faculty attitudes will open the door for discussion and action to enhance design and involvement in developmental programs for faculty advisors. Understanding faculty's attitudes regarding effective student advising will allow institutions to better serve the needs of students and therefore increase student satisfaction.

Centering Humanism In Stem Education written by Bryan Dewsbury and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-24 with Education categories.

Research demonstrates that STEM disciplines perpetuate a history of exclusion, particularly for students with marginalized identities. This poses problems particularly when science permeates every aspect of contemporary American life. Institutions’ repeated failures to disrupt systemic oppression in STEM has led to a mostly white, cisgender, and male scientific workforce replete with implicit and/or explicit biases. Education holds one pathway to disrupt systemic linkages of STEM oppression from society to the classroom. Maintaining views on science as inherently objective isolates it from the world in which it is performed. STEM education must move beyond the transactional approaches to transformative environments manifesting respect for students’ social and educational capital. We must create a STEM environment in which students with marginalized identities feel respected, listened to, and valued. We must assist students in understanding how their positionality, privilege, and power both historically and currently impacts their meaning making and understanding of STEM.
