While the increase in lifesaving technology has extended both the length and quality of life for patients, critics have argued that health care professionals often read the technology rather than the patient. This critique strikes at the heart of nursing, which defines itself in terms of care for the whole person. Providing a comprehensive review of the issues surrounding the rapidly emerging field of technology, this collection describes how the nursing profession faces and deals with technological advances. The complexities of technology intimately influence aspects of nursing in every setting, and directly challenge caring as the essence of nursing. The present collection gives practicing nurses, students of basic and advanced nursing, and other health care professionals an overview of the contemporary situation of technology in mainstream health care and how it impacts on the quality of that care.

Research focused on the psychological factors involved for nurses in the introduction of new technology into health care. A large-scale literature review revealed the following general points about the involvement of nurses with technology: (I) The attitudes of nurses towards new technology are critical in determining their willingness to work with it, and this may lead to high turnover and absenteeism in intensive care. (II) Several lines of evidence point to a role for anxiety in shaping attitudes towards new technology. (III) The interests of preferences of nurses are important in predicting attitudes towards working with new technology. Some of these issues were investigated in two surveys. The results of the studies supported the findings reported in (I) above, in that experience of new technology was related to more positive attitudes towards computers in hospitals. This was particularly true of the nurses working or training in intensive care. Findings did not support previous research (see (II) above) regarding the relationship between stress and either attitudes towards new technology, or work in more stressful departments.
