This book is an ideal guide for both clinicians and biologists working in cancer research. It addresses the problems associated with the early dissemination of cancer due to the heterogeneity of cancer cells and their capacity to diversify. These factors are key reasons for the stubborn persistence of the disease and its resistance to therapy in many cases. However, the knowledge required in this area is cross-disciplinary. Written by an eminent authority, this work provides an accessible interface that will help clinicians to understand the role of biologists in cancer research, while biologists will benefit from the informative look at how clinicians view the disease. It is based on many years of clinical practice and up-to-date laboratory experience.

This volume originated at the 10th Granada Seminar (a series of small topical conferences whose pedagogical effort is especially aimed at young researchers), held at the University of Granada, Spain, September 15-19, 2008, and contains the main lectures and a selection of contributed papers in that conference. This is the tenth of a series of Granada Lectures previously published by: World Scientific (Singapore 1993), Springer Verlag (Berlin 1995 and 1997) Lecture Notes in Physics volumes 448 and 493, Elsevier (Amsterdam 1999) Computer Physics Communications vols. 121 and 122, and the American Institute of Physics Conference Proceedings Series, volumes 574, 661, 779 and 887. These books and the successive editions of the Seminar since 1990 are described in detail at http://ergodic.ugr.es/cp/. An effort has been made by authors and editors to offer pedagogical notes in the present book. In particular, each topic is comprehensively described and, eventually, some practical exercises are proposed. We try to mold the Granada Lectures into a series of books that help introduce the beginner to novel advances in statistical physics and to the creative use of computers in scientific research, as well as to serve as a work of reference for teachers, students and researchers.

"In this paper we estimate the dynamic relationship between employment in R&D and generation of knowledge as measured by patent applications across OECD countries. In several recently developed models, known as ̀idea-based' models of growth, the afore mentioned "idea-generating" process is the engine of productivity growth. Moreover, in real business cycle models technological shocks are an important source of fluctuations. Our empirical strategy is able to test whether knowledge spillovers are strong enough to generate sustained endogenous growth and to estimate the quantitative impact of international knowledge on technological innovation of a country in the short and in the long run. We find that a country's stock of knowledge, its R&D resources and the stock of international knowledge move together in the long run. International knowledge has a very significant impact on innovation. As a consequence, a positive shock to R&D in the US (the largest world innovator) has a significant positive effect on the innovation of all other countries. Such a shock produces its largest effect on domestic and international innovation after five to ten years from its occurrence"--NBER website
