The full story of the three Indochina wars, told from both sides and including the plight of civilians caught up in the fighting. Of necessity, the politics of Australia, New Zealand, Britain, France, and the USA towards the push for independence and freedom by Vietnam and Laos are examined. The region known as Indochina is made up of the countries of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The First Indochina War was the patriots of Laos and Vietnam working together to defeat the French, at Dien Bien Phu. The French were there in overwhelming numbers and were supported and supplied by the USA, which directly supplied many thousands of tons of weapon directly to the French. As well as aircraft, pilots for these were at times, also supplied to the French by the USA. The USA interfered with the Paris Peace talks and Vietnam was partitioned at the 17th parallel, resulting in the Second Indochina War, which is also known as the Vietnam War. That was lost by the Americans and the USA allies when the last US soldier was withdrawn from Vietnam in 1975. The USA lost more than 58,600 men Killed in Action (KIA). That is an alarming level of casualties when you remember that for every soldier at the "Sharp End", the USA had another ten in support. In other words, when the USA numbers of soldiers in Vietnam was at 500,000, only about 50,000 of these personnel were involved directly in combat. That means the American ratio for those in support compared to those in combat was 10:1. Now look at the American KIA figure for 1961-1975, of in excess of 58,000 and you should be horrified at the killed in action figure being higher than the total amount of those involved in combat duties. After the departure of Allied forces in 1975, the Vietnamese Army invaded Kampuchea in 1978 (Third Indochina War) and then replaced the Pol Pot Government with the Hung Sen Government.

The full story, of the three Indochina Wars, including warts and all. The first was the Indochinese People fighting against the French colonists and their suppliers and allies from the USA. The second was the people of Indochina (Cambodia, Laos & Vietnam) fighting against an allied coalition force made up of Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, South Vietnam and the USA. The Second Indochina War is usually referred to as the Vietnam War. This book examines the re-adjustment of Vietnamese society after the uprising of the Tay Son Brothers in 1770, their stopping of the Trin and Nguyen families oppression of the Vietnamese people. The coming of the Catholic Church and how this affected the people is examined. As well the activities of Pineau de Bahrain, who was a missionary and the Bishop of Adran - he did much to ensure the French takeover of the majority of South East Asia. That was followed by the French takeover and full colonisation and rule by France. To better control the people, the French forbade the use of Chinese characters in writing and transcribed the entire Vietnamese language into the Latin alphabet, which was then taught in all schools. During WW2, for the first time, Asian People could see that the Caucasian People (White men) could be beaten, That resulted in the First Indochina War which ended with the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu. The Second Indochina War ended in 1975 with the withdrawal of the last American soldier from Vietnam. The Third Indochina War ended when the Vietnamese Army invaded Kampuchea, resulting in Vietnamese tanks entering its capital while the Pol Pot administration fled into the jungle.

As Australia's Government wanted to enter the conflict in Indochina, no matter what the cost, senior government figures were speaking. a quote from a meeting held to discuss the problem went something like this. "Bob, I thought that you would have been an astute and clever enough a politician to think of this yourself, but seeing how you have asked me, I suggest that you wait until eight in the night on Thursday the 29th of April to announce that Australia will send the First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment to fight in South Vietnam. By you waiting until the evening of 29/April/1965 to announce this in Parliament, the Labour Opposition leader of Arthur Caldwell and his deputy leader of Gough Whitlam should be absent, as will most of the rest f the Parliament. Because the following day is the beginning of a long weekend. You are legally not required to give advanced notice of this to the house, so you can easily get away with this! The Australian public will not know anything until the following Monday or Tuesday and by then, the First battalion will be in Vietnam. After that, Aussie soldiers at first believed what they were told. However, after they had been in Vietnam for some time and began to find out the truth of the situation, most Australian infantry and other active fighting forces doubted both their own and the American Governments.

An original feminist approach, through a study of Chaucer's treatment of masculinity, to the Canterbury Tales This volume presents a feminist approach to the Canterbury Tales, investigating the ways in which the tensions and contradictions found within the broad contours of medieval gender discourse write themselves into Chaucer'stext. Four discourses of medieval masculinity are examined, which simultaneously reinforce and resist one another: heroic or chivalric, Christian, courtly love, and emerging humanist models. Each chapter attempts to negotiateboth contemporary assumptions of gender construction, and essentialist readings of gender common to the middle ages; throughout, the author argues that the Canterbury Tales offer a sophisticated discussion of masculinity, and that it strongly indicts some of the prevalent medieval notions of ideal masculinity while still remaining firmly homosocial and homophobic. The book concludes that on the question of gender issues, the Tales are beststudied as male-authored texts containing representations and negotiations revealing much about late medieval masculinities. Dr ANNE LASKAYA teaches in the English Department at the University of Oregon.

In 1975, the last American soldier was withdrawn from Vietnam after the shameful bungling at the American embassy in Saigon as Vietnamese tanks came crashing through the gates on their way to liberate Indochina from American capitalist exploitation! The new national governments took over in all Indochina countries (Cambodia, Laos & Vietnam). Many of the heroes who sacrificed all to ensure victory now came out of the forests and some of them took for themselves property, houses, flats and cars belonging to many of the former ruling classes. Unlike the the scenes in Europe after WW2, there was not wholesale revenge and killings of former ruling classes, the new government choosing instead to send the former rulers to re-education camps. There were some cases where people denounced others in order to obtain their wealth or power. Such is the mean-spirit of jealous people! They caused many to flee from their homelands in Indochina. Many of these people became 'Boat People' and successfully settled in Australia, becoming Australian citizens and successful business people. This is the story of a cross section of these brave people.

Maximus the Confessor (c.580-662) has become one of the most discussed figures in contemporary patristic studies. This is partly due to the relatively recent discovery and critical edition of his works in various genres, including On the Ascetic Life, Four Centuries on Charity, Two Centuries on Theology and the Incarnation, On the 'Our Father', two separate Books of Difficulties, addressed to John and to Thomas, Questions and Doubts, Questions to Thalassius, Mystagogy and the Short Theological and Polemical Works. The impact of these works reached far beyond the Greek East, with his involvement in the western resistance to imperial heresy, notably at the Lateran Synod in 649. Together with Pope Martin I (649-53 CE), Maximus the Confessor and his circle were the most vocal opponents of Constantinople's introduction of the doctrine of monothelitism. This dispute over the number of wills in Christ became a contest between the imperial government and church of Constantinople on the one hand, and the bishop of Rome in concert with eastern monks such as Maximus, John Moschus, and Sophronius, on the other, over the right to define orthodoxy. An understanding of the difficult relations between church and state in this troubled period at the close of Late Antiquity is necessary for a full appreciation of Maximus' contribution to this controversy. The editors of this volume aim to provide the political and historical background to Maximus' activities, as well as a summary of his achievements in the spheres of theology and philosophy, especially neo-Platonism and Aristotelianism.

Contemporary scholarship recognizes in Maximus the Confessor a theologian of towering intellectual importance. In this book Adam G. Cooper puts to him a question which from the origins of Christian thought has constituted an interpretative crux for catholic Christianity: what is the place of the material order and, specifically, of the human body, in God's creative, redemptive, and perfective economies? While the study builds upon the insights of other efforts in Maximian scholarship, it primarily presents an engagement with the full vista of Maximus's own writings, providing a unique contribution towards an intelligent apprehension of this erudite but often impenetrable theological mind.
