The past year has produced some of the most exciting results in the history of astronomy, particularly in the area of planets outside our solar system. Only a half-year before our meeting in Toledo, Spain, the first unambiguous detection of planet-sized masses orbiting main sequence stars were reported. Since that time, evidence for a new exo planet has been reported almost at the rate of about once per month. Some of these objects are likely to turn out to be very low-mass stars, but something like half show characteristics - Jupiter-like mass and near-zero orbital eccentricity - which appear to be unique to planets. Almost at the same time that giant planets were being discovered regularly, the two major space agencies, ESA and NASA, have iden tified searches for and detailed study of Earth-like planets as a major priority for the future. In ESA's "Horizon 2000 Plus" programme, an infrared interferometer has been proposed as a possible future Cor nerstone mission. Similarly, scientists in the US produced the "Road Map for the Exploration of Neighboring Planetary Systems (ExNPS)", which provided NASA with a long-term plan which leads also to an infrared interferometer in space to study hypothetical Earth-like worlds beyond our Solar System. Such an observatory is designed to search for the thermal emission from a family of planets, using interferometric nulling to remove the contaminating light from the central star.

Picking up where they left off in RED-X, BLUE-Y finds the alien girl Zodoo chaotically pursuing her birthright to become a GOD after being possessed by the demon Kali. After much doing they subdue her but by then the earth is invaded by the Insectoids, forcing Obediah to revive Zodoo/Kali to raise her undead army to help thwart sure defeat. As one worldwide battle ensued, politicians initiated multiple schemes to undermine and control the world's poor and sabotage Terrordyne's aid projects across the globe. Fighting off invading aliens, corrupt politicians controlled by the 1 per-centers, the worldwide nuclear threat, and abject poverty forced upon the people, Terrordyne's leader employs a master plan of his own to rid the world of these evils once and for all. By instituting massive work projects, jobs programs, and incredible humanitarian inventions, Obediah begins to free the poor and middle class from under the boots of the oppressive regimes that kept the masses locked out. Their schemes and plots culminated in the firing of every nuke on the planet straight at Ten Mile High. See Monolithica, the Obama Maru, the Tokugawa, the Huangdi, and Alexander weapons platforms combine to fight off Yacafearian invaders, as the Giant Behemoth, commanded by Jeraldo Icefinger fights to capture the Insectoid Queen, Mettarra. With megalomaniacal Gods, multiple alien attackers, demons from other dimensions and good old fashion solutions to corruption, this is the answer to a lot of questions unleashed in this non-descript package. Wow... Hold onto you hats, cause this is some kind of ride!

The many papers by Soviet authors have been translated into English by A. P. Kirillov, N. A. Nikiforova, E. A. Voronov, and others. Some of the papers were trans lated by the authors themselves. The discussion records have been prepared at the Institute for Theoretical Astronomy by V. K. Abalakin, N. A. Belyaev, A. P. Kirillov, V. A. Shor, E. A. Voronov, N. S. Yakhontova, and others. The three papers published in French have been carefully checked by B. Milet. The final editing has been done at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and we thank J. H. Clark, P. D. Gregory, J. E. Kervick, and G. Warren for retyping much of the material. Our special thanks are due to the D. Reidel Publishing Company for the excellent care they have taken in printing these proceedings of IAU Symposium No. 45. G. A. CHEBOT AREV E. I. KAZIMIRCHAK-POLONSKA Y A B. G. MARSDEN INTRODUCTION The idea to organize a Symposium on 'The Motion, Evolution of Orbits, and Origin of Comets' dates back to the IAU thirteenth General Assembly, held in 1967 in Prague. Owing to the impossibility of completing during the General Assembly the discussion on the problem of orbital evolution of comets Professor G. A. Chebotarev, then the newly elected President of IAU Commission 20, initiated the organization of the international symposium in Leningrad where the full scope of cometary problems might be considered from the viewpoint of celestial mechanics.

"The three most commonly accepted theories which philosophers have adopted in order to solve the mysterious problem--the origin of the Universe--are: First. That it is Self-made. [Pantheism.] Second. That it is Self-existent. [Atheism.] Third. That it is Created by an external agency or Supreme Intelligence. [Spiritualism.] In our examination of these theories, we have not entered the sanctuary; nor discussed any religious dogmas. We have taken the Mosaic account of Creation, as we have the cosmogonies of Epicurus, Kant, Laplace and others, as their theories, to account for the origin of the visible universe, and endeavored to logically and philosophically analyze them; in order to see which might be the most probable. We have, more particularly, examined the foundation on which rests the philosophy of Herbert Spencer. Also, the theories of Charles Darwin, and endeavored to see if the philosophical structures which they have built thereon, can stand the test of a logical analysis. We have presented to our readers a new theory for the Origin or formation of the World and Species; and, for this purpose, have accepted the hypothesis: That first, before the worlds were formed, there existed a chaos; a mass of primordial matter termed Atoms. We have not inquired into the primal cause of these, but, assisted by the science of molecular physics, have built up the structure of our theory, and endeavored to show the secondary or natural cause of the origin of all forms, organic and inorganic. Also, of the continuing existence of all living things, and species of things. We may be permitted to say: That this book will be best appreciated by those who have some knowledge of philosophic literature; but no previous reading is necessary to the understanding of the argument or the passing of judgment upon its conclusions"--Preface.
