As a follow-up to Towards a Just Curriculum Theory and Curriculum Epistemicide , this volume illuminates the challenges and contradictions which have prevented critical curriculum theory from establishing itself as an alternative to dominant Western Eurocentric epistemologies. Curriculum and the Generation of Utopia re-visits the work of leading progressive theorists and draws on a complex range of epistemological perspectives from the Middle East, Africa, Southern Europe, and Latin America. Paraskeva illustrates how counter-dominant narratives have been suppressed by neoliberal dynamics through an exploration of key issues including: itinerant curriculum theory, globalization and internationalization, as well as utopianism. Foregrounding critical curriculum theory as a vector of de-colonization and de-centralization, the text puts forth Itinerant Curriculum Theory (ITC) as an alternative form of anti-colonial, theoretical engagement. Over five hundred years since it was named, utopia remains a vital concept for understanding and challenging the world(s) we inhabit, even in – or rather because of – the condition of ‘post-utopianism’ that supposedly permeates them. In Rethinking Utopia David M. Bell offers a diagnosis of the present through the lens of utopia and then, by rethinking the concept through engagement with utopian studies, a variety of ‘radical’ theories and the need for decolonizing praxis, shows how utopianism might work within, against and beyond that which exists in order to provide us with hope for a better future. He proposes paying a ‘subversive fidelity’ to utopia, in which its three constituent terms: ‘good’ (eu), ‘place’ (topos), and ‘no’ (ou) are rethought to assert the importance of immanent, affective relations. The volume engages with a variety of practices and forms to articulate such a utopianism, including popular education/critical pedagogy; musical improvisation; and utopian literature. The problems as well as the possibilities of this utopianism are explored, although the problems are often revealed to be possibilities, provided they are subject to material challenge. Rethinking Utopia offers a way of thinking about (and perhaps realising) utopia that helps overcome some of the binary oppositions structuring much thinking about the topic. It allows utopia to be thought in terms of place and process; affirmation and negation; and the real and the not-yet. It engages with the spatial and affective turns in the social sciences without ever uncritically being subsumed by them; and seeks to make connections to indigenous cosmologies. It is a cautious, careful, critical work punctuated by both pessimism and hope; and a refusal to accept the finality of this or any world.

Fictive Theories is a significant and innovative intervention in key debates in political theory concerning the ways theory should be philosophically grounded, and the task that political theory should set itself. Susan McManus argues that political theory has been grounded in controlling fictions (from fictions of human nature, to morals laws) that function to close possibility. Starting by interrogating the often hidden work of fictions in political theories, she argues that all theorizing is a form of world-creating. Rather than hiding the fictions at work in political theory, McManus argues that theory should become self-consciously fictive, and that there are political and ethical advantages to so doing. She then develops a uniquely deconstructive and utopian understanding of the project of political theory grounded in the 'fictive': a creative and future-oriented imagination. Rather than seeking to provide blueprints of how a polity should be organized, fictive theories seek to fabricate futures through the anticipatory articulation of possibility. The book addresses a modern reorientation of Lean, abandoning the classical waste dogma that brings direct efficiency gains and substituting by a way to achieving indirect efficiency in a continuous and sustainable manner. Waste is the output of a process that cannot be of further use, while value is a matter of valuation, a process whose output we conceive to be of further use. Value and waste are not antithetical, they are just not comparable issues. We achieve added value to the modern Lean Enterprise through synergies that bring sustainable economic benefits to the company. Such synergies use the complementarity theory developed by Milgrom and Roberts in 1990 on the principle that we can achieve maximal gains via the joint investment on complement activities and not investing. Complementarity is not something specific to Lean Enterprises; however, Lean Enterprises can benefit the most from such a concept. The reason is that Lean uses the principle of achieving more with less effort. Less effort does not mean the use of fewer resources, but the use of resources in a complementary way in order to achieve more, rather than using them. Complementarity is a feature by design. Complementarity by design will help modern Lean companies have an easier transition in the digital era and the new world of Industry 4.0. In this second edition, we have preserved the method of how to achieve Lean and have enhanced it to show how to move towards modern Lean within Industry 4.0 paradigm. However, if a company has not yet made the Lean step, there is no need to make that step first before yielding the benefits. Technology is the key. Modern Lean Enterprise strengthens out of the old paradigm into the new one of Industry 4.0. Because of evolution, such an enterprise achieves optimal technological complementarity necessary for synergies that sustain increasing profits.
