Since the start of the twentieth century, revolutionary methods of analysis have provided access to biblical literature in ways previously unimaginable. Not only has this meant the recovery of valuable historical and literary information about the biblical period, but it has also led to a decisive shift in our theological view of the Bible. Of these methods, traditio-historical research is perhaps the most promising, demanding--and controversial. Building on form-critical studies, tradition historians venture back into the unchartered realm of oral traditions and the real life situations in which those traditions were born and developed. Such work on the Old Testament has been of special importance. For the first time in a single volume, thirteen scholars from six countries who themselves have contributed to this traditio-historical research on the Old Testament reflect on the theological implications of their work. Problems considered include: the essential relation of tradition to life and faith, ancient Near Eastern influence on Israelite traditions, the relation of tradition to history, prophetic proclamation and reinterpretation, the role of the cult, oral language, revelation, the problem of community and discontinuity, the phenomenon of dissent, canonization, the tradition principle within ancient Judaism, and implications for biblical theology.
