This innovative book combines what most books separate: research as practical activity and research as intellectual engagement. It clarifies and makes explicit the methodological issues that underlie the journey from initial research idea to the finished report and beyond. The text moves the researcher logically through the research process and provides insights into methodology through an in-depth discussion of methods. It presents the research process as an engagement with text. This theme moves through the construction of text in the form of data and the deconstruction of text in analysis. Finally the focus moves to the reconstruction of text through the re-presentation of the research in the report. Following through each of these stages in turn, the chapters consider either a practical issue or a group of methods and interrogate the associated methodological concerns. In addition, the book also addresses the rarely explored issues of the researcher as writer and researcher identity as core elements of the research process. The book provides a range of insights and original perspectives. These successfully combine practical guidance with the invitation to consider the problematic nature of research as social practice. It is an ideal reference for those embarking on research for the first time and provides a new methodological agenda for established researchers.

Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Asian studies, grade: 1,3, Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus (The Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning), course: World Heritage Studies, language: English, abstract: This paper is an analysis on the transformations seen on the Chattayum mundum which is the traditional attire of Syrian Christian women in Kerala, for it to have emerged as a costume for Margamkali, which is a native Syrian Christian dance-form. I argue that although the Chattayum mundum became part of a vanishing tradition among the Syrian Christians; but by virtue of Margamkali, the Chattayum mundum has become revitalised. Thereby, the interaction between Chattayum mundum and Margamkali in contemporary Kerala, is analysed. The preliminary part of this research has been complemented by the successive phenomenological research that was based on the interviews of Syrian Christian women in Kerala. Detailed interpretations on the interviewees’ lived experiences of having worn the Chattayum mundum has been accounted for. Also, the coexistence of Chattayum mundum in its traditional form and as a Margamkali costume in the contemporary context, has been analysed. Thus, this research serves as a specific case study for heritage practitioners, to understand the potential role of contemporary artforms in revitalising the traditional forms of fashion.

“The Forgotten Sense leaves us with the hope of new discoveries and new recoveries—so that we may once again revel in the glorious, fragrant world around us.”—Wall Street Journal By one of the world’s leading researchers into the science of smell, a fascinating exploration of our most essential yet least understood sense—enabling us to appreciate food and drink, warning us of dangers, and even influencing who we fall in love with Our sense of smell guides our lives far more than our screen-heavy, sight-privileged era would suggest. It animates our experience of food and drink, helps us access memories, and strengthens our intimacy with each other. But, long considered our most “beastly” sense, the inner workings of smell have stumped scientists for centuries. Now, cognitive scientist and leading smell researcher Jonas Olofsson uncovers the sophisticated processes that drive our olfactory system, with profound implications for how we perceive the world around us. Drawing from cutting-edge original research, Olofsson shows that not only is our sense of smell extraordinarily sensitive, its process of chemical exchange shaped human evolution on its most fundamental level. From the pheromones, environmental signals, and emotions we process with each breath, olfaction makes us the individuals we are. Moreover, smelling is an intellectual exercise, Olofsson argues, one that we have the remarkable capacity to strengthen and, with some effort, even regain after illness. With infectious curiosity and a host of applications—from emotional health and gastronomy to literature and even politics—The Forgotten Sense is a wide-ranging and entertaining look at this most understudied function of human life.
