In 1998,"the flood of the century" covered more than two-thirds of Bangladesh, causing crop losses of 2.04 million tons of rice, an amount equal to 10.45 percent of target production in 1998/99. This flood threatened the health and lives of millions through food shortages caused by crop failure, loss of purchasing power, and the spread of water-borne disease. Yet very few flood-related deaths occurred, and reportedly none was due to food shortages. This report, based on data from a survey of 757 rural households in seven flood-affected regions (thanas) conducted in November and December 1998 and on analysis of secondary data on food grain markets, describes how Government of Bangladesh policy, well-functioning private markets, household coping strategies, and donor and NGO interventions combined to avert a major food crisis. To further enhance its food security, Bangladesh needs continued investments in agricultural research, extension, roads, electricity and other rural infrastructure, policies promoting efficient markets, and programs to provide targeted transfers and credit to poor households.

This two-volume encyclopedia provides the science behind such heart-pumping geophysical hazards as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, cyclones, and floods, as well as authoritative entries on notable natural disasters around the world and the agencies that help those they impact. Natural Hazards and Disasters explores the sometimes harsh effects of nature on human life. The set discusses the physical science behind specific types of hazards and disasters (such as blizzards and tsunamis), their impact on our lives, how damage is mitigated or prevented, recovery and reconstruction, and the current research and technology used for managing or even eliminating the hazards. Written by experts in the field, the set also explores a variety of extreme events from around the world, including the 2010–2011 Christchurch Earthquakes (New Zealand), the 2017–2018 Thomas Fire (United States), and the 2018 Kerala Floods (India). Also covered are the world's major international and nonprofit aid agencies, like the Salvation Army and Oxfam, that assist disaster victims.

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Water Science and Application Series, Volume 1. Lake Champlain in Transition: From Research Toward Restoration synthesizes research studies on the chemistry, biology, atmospherics, hydrodynamics, hydrology, land use, and management of Lake Champlain and its basin. Additional studies define the cultlural, social, and economic pressures on the lake's ecosystemm. The volume presents research results on lake sediment toxicity and its effect on benthic and aquatic species. Trophic levels were studied, from the impacts of nitrogen and phosphorus on phytoplankton to multiple "trophic cascades" and management implications. Phosphorus loading and subsequent eutrophication was examined by looking at comprehensive loading budgets, a whole-lake mass-balance model, and subsequent management schemes. This comprehensive research effort was undertaken to develop a management plan devoted to preserving the lake ecosystem, and the volume will interest environmental planners and managers as well as limnologists and hydrologists.
