This book explores the growing attention that sociology has started to give to environmental issues in terms of peace and social justice. With a focus on sociological theory and its development, it reconstructs the long journey made by the social sciences towards the reconstruction, in a single theoretical paradigm, of the problems associated with the implementation of conditions of peace and sustainability. Beginning from the premise that environmental issues are never purely environmental, but entail political, economic and social implications, Sustainable Development and Peace offers an understanding of where we are heading and how, reflecting on present challenges and possible directions for the future. It will, therefore, appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, development studies, politics and environmental studies.

The intersection of business, peace and sustainable development is becoming an increasingly powerful space, and is already beginning to show the capability to drive major global change. This book deciphers how different forms of corporate engagement in the pursuit of peace and development have different impacts and outcomes. It looks specifically at how the private sector can better deliver peace contributions in fragile, violent and conflict settings and then at the deeper consequences of this agenda upon businesses, governments, international institutions and not least the local communities that are presumed to be the beneficiaries of such actions. It is the first book to compile the state-of-the-field in one place and is therefore an essential guide for students, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners on the role of business in peace. Without cross-disciplinary engagement, it is hard to identify where the cutting edge truly lies, and how to take the topic forward in a more systematic manner. This edited book brings together thought leaders in the field and pulls disparate strands together from business ethics, management, international relations, peace and conflict studies in order to better understand how businesses can contribute to peacebuilding and sustainable development. Before businesses take a deeper role in the most complicated and risky elements of sustainable development, we need to be able to better explain what works, why it works, and what effective business efforts for peace and development mean for the multilateral institutional frameworks. This book does just that.

Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Sociology - War and Peace, Military, grade: 3.96, ( Atlantic International University ), course: Sociology - SDG #16, language: English, abstract: This assignment is an attempt to discuss the state of Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions in the world and how I think the UN goal can be achieved. Our globe is plagued with poverty, hunger, health epidemics, war, economic uncertainty, etc. In the light of this, the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, include 17 different goals that were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The 16th goal which is about Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effect and accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. For decades peace seems to have evaded most parts of our world. While some regions enjoy peace, security and prosperity, many others fall into seemingly endless cycles of wars, conflict and violence. The UN Peacekeepers and other peace seeking councils and stakeholders seem to be at their wits end as to reaching global peace. Institutions have been so weakened by greed and corruption that they are unable to ensure justice especially for the less privileged and vulnerable. Worst of all these include the police and the judiciary, who represent the main institutions of fighting corruption and ensuring justice for all. It is impossible expect sustainable development without peace, stability, respect for human rights and effective governance, based on the rule of law. This is really a global challenge.

"This Eurostat publication, entitled "Sustainable development in the European Union - A statistical glance from the viewpoint of the UN Sustainable Development Goals", provides an overview of the current situation of the EU and its Member States on sustainable development in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This publication follows a strictly descriptive approach, presenting a purely statistical picture based on facts and figures. It provides rather a snapshot of the starting position of the EU and its Member States and is not intended as a regular SDG monitoring exercise at EU level. The analysis in this publication is based on a limited number of indicators, which are relevant to the EU perspective and capture the broader objective and ambition of each SDG. Each goal is analysed through two to four indicators. In total, 51 indicators are presented in the report, mainly obtained from the European Statistical System and disseminated by Eurostat. The analysis of Member States' performance and international comparisons focus on the most recent year for each indicator. EU-28 trends over time are also presented, covering the period from 2000 or 2002 up to the most recent year for which data are available (2014 or 2015)."--Back cover.
