Anton de Kom’s We Slaves of Suriname is a literary masterpiece as well as a fierce indictment of racism and colonialism. In this classic book, published here in English for the first time, the Surinamese writer and resistance leader recounts the history of his homeland, from the first settlements by Europeans in search of gold through the era of the slave trade and the period of Dutch colonial rule, when the old slave mentality persisted, long after slavery had been formally abolished. 159 years after the abolition of slavery in Suriname and 88 years after its initial publication, We Slaves of Suriname has lost none of its brilliance and power.

Suriname is a fascinating yet also little known Caribbean country. Fascinating because a unique variety of lifestyles and group identities has characterized this country from its early beginnings as a European plantation colony, but even more so since the influx of contract laborers from British India and Java in the nineteenth century. Little known because even when attention was focused on the country, particularly following a military coup d'état in 1980, this awareness has contributed little to a better understanding of the country's complex developments. In fact, the media have not unveiled but rather covered the essentials of the evolving Suriname society. Combining a broad thematic approach with a focus on long-term developments in Suriname, 20th Century Suriname consists of fourteen chapters that discuss the main trends with respect to major areas of research. Topics such as Surinamese politics and economics, as well as its social, religious, and cultural aspects are covered by the best contemporary specialists on Suriname in the United States, the Netherlands, and Suriname. This volume provides an accessible introduction to Suriname for a general audience, including graduate and undergraduate students, and an authoritative 'state of the art review' for Suriname specialists.

Shackles And Bonds written by Eveline Sint Nicolaas and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-22 with Netherlands categories.
Shackles and Bonds uses objects from the Rijksmuseum collection to tell the shared history of Suriname and the Netherlands. Viewing these paintings, drawings, artefacts and photographs from multiple perspectives allows us to tell a diversity of stories. A glass used to raise a toast to a plantation is inscribed with the words The prosperity of Siparipabo, but it also features an engraved scene of enslaved people a juxtaposition which today leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. This glass can be used as a vehicle to tell the story of the appalling conditions in which enslaved workers lived on the sugar plantations. A viewing box containing a miniature three-dimensional scene of Zeezigt plantation was a showcase for the property of the proud owner, but it is also a powerful medium for revealing the position of enslaved people on this plantation. And what do we learn from the photographs in an early twentieth-century album showing jewellery belonging to South Asian indentured workers? The photographer characterizes the scenes as picturesque, but what meaning did these items hold for the women themselves? In the often personal stories behind the objects in this book, we also learn about the Surinamese people who visited the Netherlands over the centuries. Who were they, and why did they make the journey? Suriname was declared a republic in 1975, and with this the formal ties between the two nations were broken. This is the moment chosen to conclude the book, in the knowledge that the shared history of Suriname and the Netherlands persists to this day.

The Republic of Suriname, located in northern South America has a rich and diverse history going back several centuries. This has seen the introduction of Christianity and the establishment and creation of many church denominations. To date, major theological works have failed to provide correct, balanced and informative dialogue on the history of Christianity and its developments in Suriname. In response to the lack of information available to the academic world this publication aims to provide a survey of the history, a summary of the works of theologians and a guide to reliable sources about Christianity in Suriname. Through overviewing the history of the major denominations in Suriname and focusing on some major issues surrounding Christianity the author delivers a unique single volume for both the general reader and a starting point for further research.
