A unique collection of competition problems from over twenty major national and international mathematical competitions for high school students. Written for trainers and participants of contests of all levels up to the highest level, this will appeal to high school teachers conducting a mathematics club who need a range of simple to complex problems and to those instructors wishing to pose a "problem of the week", thus bringing a creative atmosphere into the classrooms. Equally, this is a must-have for individuals interested in solving difficult and challenging problems. Each chapter starts with typical examples illustrating the central concepts and is followed by a number of carefully selected problems and their solutions. Most of the solutions are complete, but some merely point to the road leading to the final solution. In addition to being a valuable resource of mathematical problems and solution strategies, this is the most complete training book on the market.

Life is a series of coping with a variety of problems. Major or minor problems arise for us all the time, and our life is filled with them. Thus, we need to engage in constant problem-solving in our daily lives. This book reviews strategies, challenges and outcomes of problem-solving. Chapter One discusses computational thinking and fuzzy logic in problem solving. Chapter Two reviews digital technologies and mathematical problem solving. Chapter Three deals with the concept of Einstellung effect a psychological phenomenon evinced by problem solvers through a tendency (mind set) to use previously learned workable strategy in situations that either can be resolved more efficiently or to which the strategy is not applicable at all. Chapter Four gives an overview of the research on the use of narrative Context Rich Problems (CRP) in physics education at the upper secondary and higher education levels. Chapter Five examines teaching and assessing story problems. Chapter Six assesses the interpersonal problem-solving process. Chapter Seven discusses validations and outcomes of a multi-dimensional scale to measure strategies for solving personal problems. In Chapter Eight, the ability for solving problems in our day-to-day lives, called social problem-solving is addressed. Chapter Nine examines the relationship between social problem solving and some mediator and moderator variables among 12- and 16-year-old Hungarian students. Chapter Ten investigates the effect of improving young students self-regulatory strategies on their persistence to face and overcome cognitive obstacles and their problem-solving ability. Chapter Eleven discusses improving undergraduate student generic problem solving skills by using problem-based learning in large classroom settings. Chapter Twelve presents problem-solving therapy (PST) as an effective intervention to prevent or reduce psychopathology and to enhance positive well-being by helping individuals cope more effectively with stressful life problems. Chapter Thirteen investigates the status of Problem Solving in our modern society, and explores perspectives in the forthcoming Third Industrial Revolution.

Solving mathematical problems is both a science and an art. It is a science because we need to learn some basic concepts and skills, and use proper terminology when explaining our solution to other people. It is also an art because very often we need to be creative. There are infinitely many types of math problems, and it is impossible to learn how to solve every problem in the world. However, there are a few basic principles that are good to know. There are a few approaches and methods that are often useful. In this book, we discuss the major ones, including various types of proofs, the pigeon hole principle, the principle of mathematical induction, invariants, coloring, etc. In each chapter, we provide basic definitions and facts to get you started. We do not prove most of the well-known facts given in this book, since our main goal is to learn how to solve problems, i.e. use these facts. They are usually proved in other college courses such as abstract algebra, number theory, and analysis. Sometimes, however, the idea of a proof of a theorem can be used for solving many problems. In such cases we provide the proof. The book contains over 300 problems on various topics and detailed solutions of approximately half of them. This book is primarily intended for high school and college students and mathematics teachers. Most chapters are accessible to middle school students as well. It would especially be helpful for those competing in mathematics contests and wishing to improve their problem solving skills. The first edition contained some minor errors which have been fixed in the second edition. More problems were also added.

Problem Solving Strategies: Decision Making and Problem Solving for a Cluttered and Confusing World. When faced with problems, people often hide, allow their dreams to fall away, and ultimately disallow themselves to live the lives they truly desire. With the help of this book, people can rectify the fear they face every time they find themselves up against a problem. They can create logical and creative solutions and glide through life's everyday problems, for the rest of their days. Problem Solving Strategies: Decision Making and Problem Solving demands to understand why people allow themselves to falter against their problems. When faced with a problem, different kinds of people do different kinds of things. For example: some hide. Some turn to the assistance of others, and some work through their problems creatively. How can you, the reader, learn to encapsulate all the elements of the perfect problem solver-with all of his logical, analytical, and CREATIVE pursuits-to create an essential solution to your problem? This book teaches the reader how to identify his problems. (Know that this is NOT as easy as it seems. Generally, the "problem at hand" is not the problem at the root.)It teaches the reader to utilize both the LEFT and the RIGHT brain, to create strategic life hacks, and to engage in SELF HYPNOSIS to effectively initiate creative solutions. Furthermore, this book walks the reader through step-by-step problem solving solutions to classic relationship-based problems. Don't Allow Yourself to Falter from Your Dreams. Work Through Your Problems. Today.
