Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: This paper explores how podcasts can revolutionize learning in the EFL (English as a foreign language) classroom. Not only are podcasts easily accessible and transcend knowledge barriers, but they also foster close-knit communities and offer a variety of genres and formats. Although increasingly popular with young adults, their potential often remains untapped in schools. This study aims to show how teachers can use podcasts effectively in the classroom to promote communicative, intercultural and media literacy skills. With concrete application examples and creative teaching concepts, we want to give teachers the tools to integrate podcasts profitably into EFL lessons and thus make learning more exciting and interactive.

Podcasting is a combination of MP3 files, Internet radio, RSS ("Really Simple Syndication"), and iPods. MP3 files are typically individual tracks from music or comedy CDs, Internet radio is done with streaming audio in real time, and RSS lets your computer automatically keep track of new information posted on websites. Podcasting combines these technologies to create radio/music/talk programs that you can download and play on your computer or on an iPod or other portable player. Not only can you listen to podcasts, you can create and distribute your own podcasts without a lot of difficulty. Many of the techniques already used to publicize a website or a blog can be used to promote a podcast. In fact, one popular use for podcasting is as an audio blog. Podcasters can also include images and other data, so podcasting can be used for business as well as entertainment. It's possible to build training curriculum, product briefings, marketing presentations, and even new employee orientations with podcasts: the potential for this field is barely scratched.

This work is also written for colleagues who want to make a valuable contribution to teaching foreign languages and who have the courage to organize activities combined with innovative technology for our students. Within the pages of this paper, they will find everything they need to know to get started in podcasting. I would be glad, if others use this work or even expand it, so that an active exchange of ideas can take place. At the beginning of this paper I am going to explain what a podcast is and why it is becoming such a popular medium. Next, the thesis gives a short historical overview, shows directories to browse for podcasts and how to create such an audio recording (software, hardware and recording equipment). Then various techniques for publishing and distributing podcasts are explored. The paper also presents free podcast hosting sites and gives tips about copyright law and how it applies to podcasting. Practical file management strategies, including using iTunes to organize audio files, are also discussed. After building a solid technical foundation, the thesis turns to the way in which podcasting can be used at school. This chapter introduces the reader to a variety of podcasting lessons that can motivate the students.

Lesson Plan from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, University of Marburg (Fachbereich für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: New Media in Foreign Language Education, language: English, abstract: This teaching unit has been designed for eighth graders at the gymnasium who learn English as a first foreign language. The unit contains six lessons of 45 minutes each. The general aim is to learn what podcasting is about, how to listen and subscribe to specific podcasts, and the most important point: How to create ones own podcasts and how to share them with students from a twinned school. After the six lessons the teaching unit won't be finished. What follows is a steady setting-up of a correspondence between two twinned schools that is to say the German school, and a school from the USA. In this term paper we will discuss what podcasting is in general and which learning possibilities we will have for the students when working with podcasts in the 8th class of a Hessian Gymnasium. In the next chapter we will contrast the New Media with traditional teaching methods and point out some advantages concerning the teaching project. Afterwards the requirements for the students and the learning objectives will shortly be illustrated. In chapter six we will investigate the curricular connections of the given teaching unit and finally chapter seven gives a detailed description of the teaching unit. In the appendix one will find the six session plans.

PODCASTING FOR TRAINERS AND Educators (A Digital SHORTCUT) By Nandini Shastry and David Gillespie In many ways, trainers, educators, professors, teachers, instructors, SMEs or course developers — whatever your title may be, if you are responsible for any knowledge transfer process — you are the people leading the way for corporations and educational institutions to forge into the new century. By learning about new technologies and learning and adapting them to our workplaces and our personal lives, we change the mindset, not to mention the productivity of the lives of those around us. It is our belief that podcasting is the next wave of technology that corporations and educational institutions can immediately use to solve a host of training and business problems. This book aims to show you, the educator — whatever your title may be, how. You’ll learn · what podcasting is · how to use it · what tools you’ll need (free or inexpensive tools as well) · how to leverage podcasts in your own place of work · and much more in easy to understand, non-technical terms You’ll also find in this book · simulation tutorials and demos · free resources · free templates · sample communications for buy-in at your place of work · video testimonials from existing trainers, teachers and professors Dave and I have been involved in the areas of teaching, training and knowledge management for many years. Dave has taught at the university level and both of us have much experience with instructor led training, e-learning and a wide variety of tools from Macromedia Breeze and Captivate to Microsoft SharePoint and Live Meeting. We are excited about the possibilities that podcasting brings and we invite you to join us in exploring this new technology. You can reach Dave or me at [email protected] at any time and we will be happy to talk with you in person.
