Excerpt from An Introduction to Physics: For Technical Students Physics is generally acknowledged to be essential to the equipment of every technical student, and the subject forms part of the curriculum of most Junior Day Technical Schools and Trade Schools. In the following pages a scheme of the subject is developed, which forms a two-year course when two or three hours a week are devoted to the subject. Since most technical students take Applied Mechanics and Electricity as separate subjects, the portions of Physics usually treated under these 'heads have been purposely omitted from this course and thus the danger of overlapping has been avoided. Apart from these omissions the whole of the elements of the subject have been passed under review, and if the treat ment of certain portions is brief, it is hoped that the breadth of outlook which the student derives from such a running survey will be considered sufficient compensation. The experimental work has been confined to such as requires only the very simplest apparatus. Home-made appliances have a very distinct advantage over the more professional type at this stage of the student's work. Sections I., II., and III. Form a suitable course for the first year, and Sections IV. And V. May be completed during the second year. As one of the authors is in the employment of the London County Council it is necessary in accordance with regulations to state that the London County Council is in no way re sponsible for the contents of this book. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Physics for Technical Students: Mechanics and Heat The present volume is the outgrowth of mimeograph notes which the author has used in connection with a course of lectures given during the past six years. Since the author has also conducted the recitations for several sections during this time, the successive revisions of the notes have been made by one viewing the work from two angles, that of class instructor, as well as that of lecturer. It is believed that in this way a keener realization of the students difficulties, and a better appreciation of what parts should be revised, have been obtained than would have been possible without this two-fold contact. We now have a large and rapidly increasing number of students who are interested primarily in the practical side of education. With the needs of these students in mind, the practical side of the subject has been emphasized throughout the book. This method, it is believed, will sustain interest in the subject by showing its application to everyday affairs, and will, it is hoped, be appreciated by both students and instructors in Agriculture and Engineering. In this connection, attention is directed to sections 18, 19, 20, 29, 30, 39, 44, 54, 56, 60, 62, 63, 76, 80, 83, 108, 109, 111, 134, 138, 170, 185, 189, 190, 195, 200, 204, 205, 206, 218 and Chapters VII, XII, XVII, and XVIII. More space than usual has been devoted to the treatment of Force, Torque, Translatory Motion, and Rotary Motion. It is felt that the great importance of these topics, which underlie so much of the subsequent work of the student, warrants such treatment. Probably everyone who has taught the theory of electrical measuring instruments, for example, has realized that the students greatest handicap is the lack of a thorough grasp of the fundamental principles of mechanics. The student who has thoroughly mastered elementary mechanics has done much toward preparing himself for effective work in technical lines. The sketches, which are more numerous than is usual in such a text, are chosen with special reference to the help they will be in enabling the student to readily grasp important or difficult principles. Excerpt from An Introduction to Physics: For Technical Students Many students of all ages and of all types show a marked tendency to regard certain subjects as being "useful," and others as being the reverse. No policy could have a more sinister influence on progress or place such a final limit on the student's actual usefulness in his vocation. If any of the great discoveries or inventions which have revolutionised civilisation be examined and tracked back to its source, we invariably find a man working in some apparently quite useless field of research, with no object in view other than the acquisition of knowledge. Utility never enters his head, for the stage of the work engaging his immediate attention is such that no living man is in a position to say what is "useful" and what is not. The useless of to-day may be of paramount importance to-morrow. When Volta in 1800 made his voltaic pile and obtained a feeble current of electricity, and Oersted in 1820 discovered the action of a current on a magnet; when Davy in 1821 demonstrated the power of a current to magnetise steel, and Faraday in 1831 showed that a current in one circuit could induce a current in another circuit, no one could foretell that these discoveries would lead to the production of a dynamo which, when rotated at Chelsea, could propel an electric train at Hampstead. The contemporaries of the pioneers just mentioned may have said to them: "This is all very interesting, but what is the use of it?" If they had answered: - "In less than a century these principles will enable a man in London to speak to a man in Paris," they would have been laughed at. Again, we may note that great discoveries and inventions have seldom if ever been made by one man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
