ABSTRACT This discourse analysis employs Michel Foucault's practice of problematization to conduct an archaeological examination of discursive formations that brought the object of western percussion and the subject of the musical percussionist into their conditions of modern possibility in higher education. The archaeological analysis describes a confluence of nineteenth-century thought linking percussion and the percussionist to notions of progressive evolution and to qualitative comparisons between notions of western civilization and primitive non-western drumming. The archaeology is followed by a genealogical analysis of the Percussive Arts Society archive Percussive Notes 1963-1987, where I conduct a close reading of texts that deploy notions of quality as a discursive technology to mark differences between drummers and percussionists, as well as kinds of music. The genealogical analysis describes how discourses of quality differentiate drumming from percussion and the drummer from the percussionist based on the idea that quality music is melodic music belonging to the western classical music tradition. To perform quality music, the percussionist must be taught how to read music notation, understand music theory, and play a definite pitched mallet percussion instrument, as opposed to a snare drum or drums belonging to a non-western culture. The use of quality as a marker of difference was fundamental to a discursive strategy developed throughout the PAS archive to transform the image of the percussionist away from the abjected, primitive, functional, unmusical, drummer. The strategy focused on reforms to the music education curriculum that emphasized teaching the student how to first play a definite-pitched mallet percussion instrument, thereby shifting the subject position of the potential percussionist away from the practices of an unmusical drummer. A notable absence in the archive was any mention of the interrelationship between colonial discourses concerning percussion and systemic racism. Masking the relationship between the modern invention of percussion, racialized colonial discursive practices of progressive evolution-non-western drumming as primitive versus western percussion as civilized-were discourses that spoke to music as a universal language and music as on object of aesthetic contemplation existing outside the socio-cultural politics of knowledge. Implications of the study suggest that the concept of percussion and the musical percussionist are recent inventions discursively developed around notions of quality and linked to racist constructions of non-western drummers. A second implication is that the curriculum design of preservice music teacher education was shaped by notions of quality music and musicality, particularly in response to the discursive strategy for fabricating the percussionist as a musician. Also, the analysis suggests that the monocultural hegemony of the WCMT in the music curriculum in higher education is conditioned on the use of quality as a form of power/knowledge to normalize the ordering and sorting of music traditions. Finally, to address the ways in which percussion and the percussionist intersect with the politics of race, gender, sexuality, ableness, etc., I propose the development of what I tentatively term Critical Percussion Studies (CPS) as an academic project with a research component that actively works to bring multiple theoretical perspectives and research practices to questions concerning the development of percussion performance and pre-service music educator curricula in higher education. It is within the framework of CPS that I suggest future research examining the emergence of the "cosmopercussionist," a new subject of percussion education in higher education whose conditions of possibility require the recycling of past discourses concerning progressive evolution married to 21st-century discourses in higher education concerned with fabricating students as "global citizens."
