In an innovative, pluri-disciplinary approach this volume focuses on how memory in Sacred Heart devotion is created, promulgated and transformed. The volume with contributions by historians, theologians, religious scientists and art historians links the dimension of memory to that of iconography, language, body and ritual practices and sheds light on adaptations, transfers, contestations and variations in a perspective of longue durée from the late Middle Ages to the present. The first part of the volume develops central axes of analysis, which are specifically investigated in the two following parts. The contributions of part two intertwine perspectives of cultural, social and art history focusing on the multi-layered creation, public presence and political usage, diversity and variations of Sacred Heart iconography and devotion in a long-term perspective. In-depth analyses centre on late medieval northern Italy, early modern France and 18th-century Switzerland (Eidgenossenschaft), on France from the 1950s to the 1980s, and on Indonesia in the 20th and 21st centuries. In a dynamic way, the third part combines systematic theological, philosophical and didactic reflexions on the Sacred Heart with a focus on imagination, embodiment, spirituality and memory.

Ia dilahirkan di lingkungan yang berporos pada keraton, sebagaimana Ahmad Dahlan, namun bertolak dari perpaduan antara kebudayaan keraton dan empirisme filosofis untuk menghadapi persoalan dan pertanyaan modernitas serta kondisi kolonial yang dialami oleh apa yang dulu disebut Hindia Belanda dan sekarang dikenal sebagai Indonesia. Sebagaimana yang terlihat pada semua tulisan dalam buku ini, Ki Ageng Suryomentaram adalah sosok yang unik dan istimewa. Pada masa di mana rasionalitas menjadi salah satu ciri dari Renaisans Jawa, ini menjadi karakteristik penentu dari pemikiran Ki Ageng Suryomentaram. Kendati ia jelas-jelas merupakan seorang Jawa Muslim, tulisan-tulisannya dapat dipahami sebagai filsafat rasionalis tentang diri, akal budi, dan masyarakat. Ia tidak terlalu terlibat dengan modernisme Muslim atau mistisisme kebatinan modern. Kendati ia menekankan pentingnya hidup di antara rakyat jelata sepanjang sebagian besar hayatnya, tidak ada tanda-tanda bahwa dirinya dipengaruhi oleh pemikiran Marxis. Ki Ageng Suryomentaram merupakan pemikir yang rasional dan juga jelas-jelas sekular. Ini tidak berarti bahwa ia adalah seorang sekularis sebagaimana seseorang yang tidak beragama. Tulisan-tulisannya nyaris tak mengisyaratkan apa-apa perihal keyakinannya dan membuat kita tak bisa menyimpulkan apa-apa terkait hal ini. Ia berkutat dengan pencarian keselarasan serta kebahagiaan di dunia ini, bukan di dunia sana. Adalah hal yang jelas bahwa Ki Ageng Suryomentaram merupakan nasionalis Indonesia yang teguh dan bahwa ia menerima Pancasila sebagai dasar dari kehidupan nasional. Adalah jelas juga, sebagaimana yang diamati Bonneff, bahwa ia lebih berkutat dengan elemen dari ideologi nasional tersebut yang menyangkut keadilan sosial alih-alih “Ketuhanan yang Maha Esa,” yang jelas-jelas religius. Sebagaimana Tolstoy, ia juga curiga terhadap kekuatan negara serta menekankan peran individu sebagai aktor sosial dan moral yang independen dari negara. Mark Woodward
