God, Cosmos and Man builds a powerful scientific interpretation of existence centered on the meticulous, integrated development of several main concepts: 1. Matter here and everywhere spontaneously self-organizes; 2. All order we see in the universe has resulted from matter's self-organization; 3. Life is the highest state of spontaneously self-organized matter, and almost certainly exists widely in the cosmos; 4. Mind is the highest state of life, seemingly capable of exerting progressively increasing control over the universe as intelligence further evolves; 5. Science seems to be telling us that god may be different than at least the Western religions would have us believe. Humans basically had a blind-faith, religious view of existence when modern science arose about 400 years ago. But science has progressively superceded religion relative to many critical issues, and remaining topics seem likely to fall to science's relentless onslaught as well. This book carefully crafts a powerful argument based on diverse biological and physical disciplines to show how a remarkably consistent world view emerges from today's science. Such a new perspective carries powerful attributes that may be more satisfying for many, and as any world view should do and agrees with what we actually see. This book provides a fresh, penetrating, scientific analysis of existence, and reveals veiled but powerful interrelations between matter, conscious mind, and cosmic makeup that suggest imaginative new views of god.

Earth and Cosmos presents a comprehensive view of the many connections between the environment of Man on Earth and the environment of the Earth in the cosmos. Topics covered range from matter, radiation, and the basic forces of nature to Earth's relation to the universe, the galaxy, and the sun. The energy balance and global circulation of the atmosphere are also discussed, along with continents, oceans, and climate. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with an overview of the environment of Man on Earth, with emphasis on the Earth's chemical composition and how it is related to both cosmic and terrestrial processes; the radiation environment at the Earth's surface and above; how the atmosphere interacts with both solar and terrestrial radiation; and climate. The following chapters explore matter, radiation, and the laws of nature in relation to the universe; how the terrestrial environment is related to the structure of the universe as a whole; how the composition of the solar system and the Earth reflects the history of the galaxy; and the stability of the Earth's environment. The origins of life on Earth and the impact of human activities on the planet are also considered. The last chapter speaks of the future of humanity, and notably of the problem of the population explosion and its consequences. This monograph will be of interest to students, astronomers, planetary scientists, astrophysicists, biologists, chemists, and geologists.

Excerpt from Man's Place in the Cosmos: And Other Essays And whatever the starting-point of the discussion may be, the main concern of every essay is to enforce the same view of the world and of man. That view I have described in one of the papers as humanism, in opposition to naturalism; in another reference, it might be described as ethicism, in opposition to a too narrow intellectualism. Man as rational, and, in virtue of self-conscious reason, the free shaper of his own destiny, furnishes us, I contend, with our only indefeasible standard of value, and our clearest light as to the nature of the divine. He does what science, occupied only with the laws of events, and speculative metaphysics, when it surrenders itself to the exclusive guidance of the intellect, alike find unintelligible, and are fain to pronounce impossible - he acts. As Goethe puts it in a seeming paradox, Man alone achieves the impossible. But inexplicable, in a sense, as man's personal agency is - nay, the one perpetual miracle - it is nevertheless our surest datum and our only clue to the mystery of existence. This position is maintained in several of the essays against the lower monism of the naturalistic systems. In the long essay entitled "A New Theory of the Absolute," it is defended against the Spinozism which permeates Mr Bradley's statement of metaphysical monism.
